Dodge 1998 12 valve 1 ton withOUT dually

A guy who supposedly knows his stuff told me that the 1 ton dodge diesel 1998 came withOUT the dually option. I am skeptical.

#1 can I assume that the 2500 is the 3/4 ton and the 3500 is the 1 ton?
#2 is it true that the 1 ton came withOUT the dually (just 2 wheels in back; one on each side, instead of 4)?
#3 what is the towing capacity of the 3/4 ton vs the 1 ton?
#4 Can I easily convert the dually into a non-dually?

Thanks!

welcome to the site for starters...

#1 Correct
#2 not sure
#3 not sure
#4 how easy the job is depends on your mechanical ability. swap out the rear for a SRW rear and swap beds if you are worried about cosmetics. (if you just remove the dually fenders you will have holes from where it mounts ad there is a cut in the wheel well directly above the wheels) If you do a search you will see pictures/write ups of this being done before

There were no single wheel one tons for '98, I'm also not sure about the tow ratings, and welcome!

No one tons as previously described, but the 3/4 ton SRW is so overbuilt, no need for one.

DRW gave better stability is about it.

You would have to go to the 2500 rear end as the 3500 is too wide. Bushwhacker flares would hid e the holes and look good. And you would have to change out the front hubs to the 2500 unless yours came with the bolt on adapters. The main difference in the 2 trucks is bigger brake shoes and a little more load carrying with the duals. The rears are both Dana 80's.

2500 had a D80 hybrid. If you notice, the tubes neck down just behind the brake back plates. On a DRW D80, they are 4" all the way through.

As long as its a 4wd, it has bolt on adapters. 2wd had a a different hub and rotor than the SRW's.

#1 Yes
#2 No, Not until the 3rd gens of 2003 did Dodge offer a true 3500 with SRW.
#3 Mine will legally tow 10,000 with the presently installed tow hitch, 12,000 with load levelling hitch. A fifth wheel or gooseneck set up will do more.
#4 Depends on how far you want to take it. Montanans take the outside tire off so they don't pick up rocks that get pitched thru the fiberglass fenders. Looks barnyard, but quite effective at saving the fenders.
Not sure about the offset req'd to look normal, think factory rims will work fine. Beware the fender cutout for the dually beds is a big round arc, which is unusuall looking if you take off the dually fenders, whereas stock SRW beds have the nice squared up shape with crease around circumference.

Any pre 2003 SRW with a 3500 badge has been re-badged. The true 3500 were cab/chassis and DRW.
