open up a (what you think) question on Gauges. I know I have had a recent bad experience with a pyro gauge that was in the truck for almost 2 years. not trying to say this company or that company is better. but what do you all think on how long any pyro no matter what company makes them should be in your truck? also how do you tell if your pyro is reading accurate. mine that was bad just seemed to slowly respond slow and not really go past a certain peak temp. anyway what do you all think on duration change for peace of mind.

I've noticed the type with the amplifier boxes don't last as long as the older kind where the probe connects directly to the gauge.
No power is needed for this type except for the lighting.

Both my pyros are over 15 years old and I trust them totally.
I would no longer trust them if they didn't read close to the outside temperature with a cold engine or idle at about 300*

pyrometer. reads exhaust gas temp. egt gauge.
Mine lasted about 2 years too. bought a replacment k type from an industrial instrment co. Looks to be much tougher build. no little nipple at the end just square cut...

I wanted to start this thread for people to realize as well the importance of gauges also. the pyro one of the most important IMO. I have seen them fail right out of the box and still show value but I know well enough a new pyro should not show 200 degrees after idle and 2 min driving on the road. etc. I guess in some cases you get what you paid for. my last was a dipricol pyro had 2 replacements with it. this was a $$ high dollar one. and now have a autometer with the air core ambient temp reading gauge. I dont care much for the way it looks but it is more precise than last ones I have run.

yes and also dont forget burning bugs with a magniflying glass

I installed mine in 2000.
It has never given me a problem.
Still reads 300* at idle (slightly higher if the AC is on).
And shows ~650* unloaded at highway speed cruise.

Maybe I've been lucky.



I think some folks' problems come from installing so the probe is touching the inside of the exhaust runner.

The funny part is that I was just telling my 7 year old that I needed to get him a real magnifying glass. He didn't understand why and I told hiim to read this thread, heh, heh....
