What Do You Think 2006or2005 3500
Will I guess the title says it all thinking about doing it trade in 98 1/2 q cab only 72000mi .I would like to know the differance between the NV 5600 HD/and the G 56 or what ever they call it now. I know they quit making the NV5600 HD in 2005 and the G56 replaced it .I heard it was not as strong as the NV5600. thks zip

You'll have to work long and hard to break either 6 spd. Both are/were used in truck far bigger than a dually pickup. The nv5600 is out of production now, and parts for them are apparently getting pretty hard to find and expensive. Mechanically, I don't think you can go wrong with either. If you get an '05, look at the intercooler. The early 05's had plastic intercooler end tanks. They went back to all metal coolers in late '05, since there were problems with the plastic ones blowing out. Not the end of the world if a truck has one, just something to keep in mind.

great timing.
I really checked this out because I had spent 30k miles with the 48re and decided I just couldn't live with its shift pattern any longer.
I test drove a 06 with the G56 and was very displeased with its shift pattern. Start off in 2nd, or 3rd for that matter. All the way up to 5th gear by 40mph....and in 6th, 60mph gets 2000rpm on the clock. Now for guys who want to tow big loads, I'll bet this is super. However, for guys who tow moderate loads (like me @ 5-6K) or nothing at all, this is a bad deal. And there is no other choice, like 3.54 gearing for example.
And then....
The dealership came up with a 05 3500 with an NV5600. Waaay different animal. Still starts out in 2nd empty, but when I tried to do the 2nd to 4th thing like with the G56 -- forget it. Like shifting to 6th. The gears are much more spread out in the NV5600 (good thing for the light duty haulers) and top gear with the factory tires gives 67mph at 1900rpm.
Bottom line: Haul big>>>get the G56. Haul small, or not at all, NV5600 for sure.
