Do you need a special license for multiple trailers?

I may have to get a hitch put on my big enclosed trailer to pull a little flatbed back from Florida. We were going to try to get it inside the big trailer but it's heavy and I just don't think it will fit. It's about 4" too wide to roll it straight in so we were thinking about tipping it up on one wheel but I think it still won't work and one of us will end up getting hurt trying to do this. So, to eliminate the need for me to go back to Florida to retrieve it, I am thinking about putting a light duty hitch under the rear of the trailer for just this one time. I've seen trucks pulling RVs with small trailers or cars behind them. I'm wondering if those people needed a special license? I may just risk it regardless.....

The trailer probably only weighs about 800-1000lbs.....

Thanks. I found a towing blog which lists the laws for all the states regarding towing. Looks like I would be in violation in every state. I guess I'll just have to take another trip to retrieve this trailer... Arghh!!!

I thought you were a body and fender guy????? I have the same endorsements also. In fact I have been working pulling an A train (40-20) part of the time. Can't pull anything behind the TT around here though. I hate that.

I saw you pull out of your work the other day.

Ah dang another trip to FL, I take em every chance I get. Nothing wrong with a goofing off for a couple days while your down there.

BTW I haul cars commercially and one of our trailers is set up to haul trailers and I also have some one who does tow and haul (one up on the bed of the truck and one in tow). I may be able to get it moved for you. PM me if interested.

some states allow double TT (AR does). more states allow a 5th pulling a TT. I'm betting the RVers you've seen were 5th wheel or goosenecks...

You don't mention what type trailer the first one is, 5th wheel~Gooseneck~Bumper Pull?

If the trailer is as light as you say...perhaps you can stand it upright in the back of the first trailer. Just make VERY sure that it cannot come off until you want it to.

In the states that do allow pulling double trailers most require the front trailer to be a fifth wheel . Some states also require a license with doubles endorsement . There are many variations state to state . The blue rig shown has a hydraulic 5th wheel hitch at the end of the trailer to pull another 5th wheel . Pulling just 1 RV was never really profitable . The other rig also has a hydraulic 5th wheel at the end of the trailer as does the flatbed it carries on the deadhead . Couldn't get the other pic to upload

I only caught you out of the corner of my eye since I was going the other way and looking for the place across the street before they closed. I had the oil pump out of the PW and could not find the O-rings and gaskets without buying a whole new pump. I stopped in at a hydraulics place east of Orchards and the guy owned the repair place across from you also and knew he had a gasket or two hanging on the wall. I spent a couple weeks tracking that stuff down.

After I posted I realized you had told me you had a class A. I don't have Hazmat or bus. Don't want to be driving a bus and hauled just enough Hazmat around 1980 to know I'm not doing that again.

They didn't have CDL's when I got in the Fire Department, just Chauffeurs license. I kept that up, drove part time on my days off some summers and when the CDL came along took 5 of the tests and aced them all. Course, I thought they were pretty easy since the company I pulled for gave us a 2 hour class beforehand.

I'm hauling crushed cars out of wrecking yards now. I like it since I like being in wrecking yards. Lot of stuff to back into though. Truck is parked over at Shur-way on St. Johns. Black Pete. There's two of over there but the other one is just parked along with a crusher and some other trailers that I sometimes pull. Another Black Pete parks there also but he has reefer behind it and that isn't ours.

The first trailer is indeed a 26' enclosed bumper pull trailer. I have also decided that I will be trying to stand the small trailer up on end in the back of the big trailer with the tongue straight up and the wheels facing the rear. Kind of like what you are suggesting JAXOM but it will actually sit on the floor of the trailer instead of just hanging on the rear. I'm gonna strap the heck out of it and then I'm gonna close the rear door as far as I can and then strap the heck out of it too. I'll tie some red flags on it somehow and be on my way. Gonna look Beverly Hillbilly-like but if it keeps me from driving back to Fl, or paying someone else to haul it for me, then that's how it's gonna work. We will have plenty of people there to help with doing this so it shouldn't be a problem regardless of how heavy the small trailer is.....
You know I'll post some pics of this if I do it....
Haulin-RV, I'll keep you in mind if this somehow does not work. We really don't want to shell out that extra $$$ if we don't need to......

The bad part about doing this is that all that weight will be at the very rear of the trailer and there will be nothing up front. Should make for a bouncy ride back if I can't adjust properly for it with the WDH......

If your potable water tank is up front you could fill it up to help balance the trailer.

It's just an enclosed cargo trailer. No living quarters.......
