Well it depends. When I did mine, I did have to use one in just a couple of areas where the old gasket stuck. Most of it though just lifted right off. You might get lucky and have it all come off no problems, you might not.

Scotch brite pads work the best. Put a towel in the intake before you start.
I also used a shop vac to clean everything again b4 reinstall. The heater grid can be cleaned on the bench, a scotch brite type of pad won't gouge anything.

Do you really need to reinstall the heater grid or does it not affect the airflow?

You either have to reinstall the heater grid or get a spacer that is made to take its place.

Eric@TVP did a dyno test on this and showed very modest gains (I think 6 hp) with the grid delete.

I'd leave the grid in. When I did mine I just used a putty knife and some carb cleaner. Easy as pie...

Mine came off in one piece. However when i replaced the grid heater with a Winspeed spacer, the bottom gasket stuck in a few areas but all I did was scrape it with a small flat razor.
