I am actually surprised, considering how much current they draw, that it wasn't glowing red like a stove burner.

Now replace the wiring with something capable of the 200-amps and then watch them light up, there is a lot of resistance in the circuit.

I have an old CHilton manual that says the Volvo diesel grid heaters will get up to 1200* IIRC. That is about a bright orange heat, if it's regular steel.

Yeah you can say that its under wired... but thats sort of a governor for the grid, keeps it from melting anything around it :-P I think anything under 1000* doesn't glow... i could be wrong but thought it was much higher in temp.

I wanna see a turbo housing glowing when your drag racing, that would be an awesome video!

Wow, this is a wake up call! Those guys were serious when they said to disconnect the grid heater first

Just yesterday, I added a remote start button right next to the air box, made it a one man operation for bleeding the injector lines and getting the old girl running with either, I mean ether.

I've used ether on engines with grid heaters, never had any problems. On the powerstrokes we just let them sit and grab a gasser. :-P Nothing like an old 390 throwing more smoke than a diesel(it needs ether in cold too).
