What to DO?
99 4X4 Just had codes pulled and a 1693 came out. The shop said it is either PCM/ECM trouble. I called local Dodge dealer he said PCM is 700.00 and that there are only 2 remaining in the warehouse, and this part is VIN specific. He then went on to say that the ECM is 1600.00. Is there any aftermarket modules that can take the place of OEM or should I bust out my gun and put it out of it's (MY) misery ? HELP!

First, calm down a bit. The 1693 is a companion code that tells you that you have a code stored in the PCM or ECM, nothing to freak out about.
Edit: Is the truck acting up? Is the 1693 the only code?

1693 was the only code which came up or so says the broken english mechanic, and yes the truck has been acting up a bit it tends to skip a beat at about 2k rpm not constantly but enough to cause me to fear another VP replacement on the horizon. The motor has 240k, replaced the last VP at about 160k.
I don't want to panic but I hate to see her in distress.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? If not, I would highly recommend spending the $$$ to get one.
Couple of other questions come to mind.
At the last vp44 replacement did you replace the camshaft position sensor? Have you replaced the crankshaft position sensor?
I replaced all sensors at 100k whether they need them or not. MAP, IAT and both the cam and crank position sensors.
My suggestions are as follows. Get someone that you trust and knows what their doing to pull the codes. Get a FP gauge, if all is good there, replace the both the cam and crank sensors first to see if it clears up the skip.
You can get a code reader at Walmart or Harbor Freight or any auto parts shop. Then you'll be able to pull the codes yourself.

Good advice Mike. dadwana, don't stress out over it. Just get a fuel pressure gauge hooked up on that truck ASAP. You just thread it into the top of your fuel filter housing, very easy install. Once installed, make sure you have a minimum of 10psi WOT. Your symptoms can be only a minor thing, not necessarily a vp failure. I've seen APPS sensors do the same thing that you describe, also cam or crank sensors as Mike suggested. My friends truck had similar issues & it turned out to be a bad battery terminal. Another friend had a bad ground going to the frame. I would do the fp gauge, clean all battery terminals, then drive the truck. The real trouble code will pop its head out eventually.
