when do the rear main seals go out?
I did my KDP last Saturday. My front crank seal was slightly leaking, and the KDP job did a nice job of correcting that problem.
I will be installing a Goerend Bros tranny this Thursday or Saturday. I'm wondering if I should replace the rear main seal just for kicks, or do the seals last forever?

Mine at 206,xxx was dripping just one drop of oil over a course of about a week. I wouldn't do it unless it is leaking and if it is just be very careful when taking the old seal out. I had to replace the retainer plate because I cracked the aluminum around the seal, it was very fragile.

My 92 started leaking at 70,000. I think I might have a slight leak on this one, at 493K. I'd guess it depends on how the seal was installed and how good the seal was made to start with.

Rear Seal
I did my rear & front seals as well as the oil pan gasket at 100,000 miles. Since I had to drop the tranny to get to it I went ahead and did the transmission bell housing to block alignment check. It was off. Maximum is .015 and mine was off center by .036. Since the guide dowels have bolts going through them on diesels and not gassers offset dowels are not sold for diesels. Well I worked with my local machine shop for three weeks and several sets of homemade offset dowels until we got the transmission bell housing to within .007 of center with the crank. I then did the alignment check of the transmission to the transmission bell housing and I had to shim that to get it aligned properly. I doubt very much that any of the dodge diesel rams out of the factory are aligned. I also had my clutch rebuilt. I will pull it off again at 200,000 and inspect it all over again. I like to know how things are holding up and what works and doesn't.
