What do I need to know?

Ok, just signed the papers today on a 07 Forest River Cherokee 285BTS. It is a 5th wheel that I think he said was about 8900 lb. I grew up on a farm and pulled many trailers, but never a 5/wheel. I'm trading in our old bumper pull. I'm sure the truck can handle it ok, but what should I be looking out for. Its going to be about a week before they can put my hitch in. Also is it going to be better @ not swaying with passing trucks?

Dan you should like the 5er better just watch the turns they usually track to the inside on the corners and yes you should be more stable when meeting semis.
Much quicker and easyer to hook up make sure you get at least 6" of box rail clearance or even a little more if you go off road i run 6.5 my self and i centered my draw pin a good inch ahead of the axle centerline i have an 8' box.

Here it is, http://www.rivercityrvs.com/used-rv-...ntoryid=31050# all tho I paid about 10k less because of trade and arguing over the hitch. Of course its not 8' long and it has 2 slides. I can't wait to get it. We love to go to the lake and camp and go boating! I have the 6' bed, but they said I didn't need a slider. I hope there right. It may take a little getting used to.

looks like a nice rig you can get away without the slider hitch since that unit has an extended pin box just watch your cab corners in real tight turns or off road/high driveway angles when turning.

Yeah, I'm just taking there word for it. I don't know about extended pins. I think I know what your talking about tho. Our old 1 was a 96 mod bump/pull and was very low to the ground. I used to drag it going thru a lot of the parks. I may drive around for a while and get used to it when I go pick it up. Its a 50 mi drive just to bring it home. I'm like a little kid on the toy aisle @ WM. Thanks for your advise.

Always make sure the pin is locked into the hitch properly as it will quickly and easily damage your bed rails and tailgate. Also make sure you put the tailgate up and down when you are supposed to.

And then check both these items again.

I have never, ever messed with a 5th. They said they would show me how to hook/unhook properly. I've pulled many trailers, but they were all bumper pull. I always wondered about the rv hitting the bed if it dropped off on one side. Don't wanna find out the hard way! Thanks for suggestions

watch steep driveway entrys, and rail road tracks. Too steep of a driveway and the trailer will put a nice dent in your bed rails.

I switched last fall from a TT to a 5er and so glad I did. It tows much easier, takes less time to hook up and place, and it sits behind my truck enroute like it is part of the truck.

A guy at my work has some nice dents on his side rails from his 5er.

I read a post a while back about that.

I still have a TT and it seems to pull fine. I think I will put a post up on the product i bought to hook it up. Its two tennis ***** on a thing like an antenna (expanding) with magnets on the end. you put one on your ball and the other on the hitch. It really helps when backing up to get it really close with just one person.

One day...maybe I will graduate and go to a 5er. For now I need the bed of my truck though....

We are not getting it for another week because of the hitch. I don't have the owners manual yet so I got a "REALLY" dumb question. Do the slides work off 12v or 110?
