what to do with my 12v (long)
Last month I added a 2001 2500 4x4 to my collection. Because of some unresolved "legal" problems, that I dont care to discuss now, I was unable to trade in my '97 12v.(2500 c.c. 2wd 5sp. bone stock).
Here is what I am faced with. I dont know if I want to keep my 12v, and sell my wifes honda civic, or viceversa.(considering I settle up my "legal" problem of course)
on one hand, I want to keep my 12v, bomb it, let my wife drive the 2001, and sell the civic.
on the other hand, I want to sell my 12v, and put the money down on my new note.
either way, I will have to settle a problem with my 12v. It has a continual gray smoke (a light smoke, its not blowing like an old loaded downfreight train) at idle. and when im driving and I romp on it, it blows the gray smoke.
and, it uses 2 quarts of oil between oil changes.(5000mi.) It doesnt leak oil either.
1. are the rings worn, and causing oil to pass by, thus causing the gray smoke?
2. timing slipped?
there is nothing wrong with the civic, it runs great. my wife says we cant keep both. I have to part with one of them. I just cant decide which one..
any input on the smoking will be helpful.

Hey Phillip ;
Just give that old stinkin 12 valve to me.
You know where to leave it.
And I know what to do with it. ;D

Phillip ;
Really it sounds like you need to do a leak down test.
That truck sounded pretty good last time I heard it.
The timing could have slipped [ have you ever had it timed ? ]
But with the oil usage I would do a leakdown test.
Start there and keep us informed.
Good Luck !

It will check the compression and tell if it is LEAKING past the rings.
You sure you don't want to just drop that thing off to me.

Well, if I can figure out how to do a leakdown test, I will give it a whirl.
are there any instructions, or are you willing to give me a how-to?

My opinion, and a very one sided one at that,is the truck is much more safer than the civic,trucks are all around better,they have much more to offer,if your wife has one you can borrow hers when yours is loaded or hooked up to a trailer,you can secretly tell the other guys that you own two cummins and you let the wife use one of them ,I do not know about you but I have a hard time fitting in a civic,and I do not look cool trying to get in one either ,my dog cannot ride comfortably in the back of the civic,the list could go on and on and on and on............. ok. did some searching, and found this. I understand the concept now. but this tester is for a gasoline engine though. i am guessing it will work, but i am wondering what to use intead of the spark plug?
any ideas or suggestions?

You have to pull the injectors and find a fitting to go in the cylinder head in place of the injectors. I have a leakdown tester I use several times a year on my Cuda to keep track of it's health, never thought to make an adapter for the truck!
