Do grid heaters always come on for a moment?

Did some searching, but no definitive answer.

I have had my truck for 6+ years (see sig) and this summer I realized my grid heaters are not coming on at all. It's always been above 60* this summer, but I thought they came on, even a bit, regardless of temp when starting. Also, the truck is not starting as cleanly as before - and I get a bit of white smoke.

The "wait to start" light doesn't stay on beyond the quick 1-2 second gauge check that the ECM/PCM does. It goes off after that and doesn't stay on. And no voltage at the grid posts under the hood.

So #1, should I expect to see the WTS light and my heaters come on for a few moments regardless of temp? I have cleaned my IAT and MAP already and no difference.

#2, what temp do the grid heaters start staying on at?

If my heaters are not operating normally, I'll start checking relays and connections under the drivers side battery. Just wanting to confirm this is not normal.

I think they should come at about 40 to 50 degrees. Anything above that and they dont come on.

The WTS light being on does not mean your heaters are on.

It is simply a programmed light.

At 60 degrees they should start firing, but even without them you should not see a bit of difference in how she starts.

I didn't see any real difference in starting or smoke till closer to 35-40
