Smile what to do, buy or let go

I have the opportunity to buy a 95 single cab 4x4 for less than 5k. It has 198k on the odometer. needs paint and interior work. Is there anything I should be hisitant of before I buy? Is this the engine with the "death pin" problem? I want to find out all I can before I spend the money or time on this.
Thanks guys.

Yes 95 has the KDP it will need to be checked and fixed if not already done. Its fairly simple to do, do a search there are threads about this.

Check for rust underneath and on frame, plan on rebuilding the front end (ball joints, tie rod ends, track bar) test the transfer case and listen for any strange noises and to make sure it shifts. Headliner is an semi easy fix and there are seat covers for ratty looking seats.

The trannys are weak of course 47rh, upside is NO vp44 problems and simple mods for more power (fuel plate, 3/4GSK, DV's) and others.

No high dollar electronic horsepower thingy to go haywire.

I have a 95 2wd with 206k and love it. Had 198 on it when I got it. PO had the trans done so I ground the plate to 0, slid it forward, did the 3GSK with a Lock up switch= I probably over looked some things but the truck sounds like a pretty good deal.

Anything is better than going out and signing the dotted line for a new one!

A diesel 4x4 is $40,000

Take out a 6 year note and you're lookin to pay the bank back $50,000 with even a good interest rate.

Spend $5000 and put a few thousand into it. This way if and when times get tough, you will not have that big NUT to crack every month.

You guys rock!

Thanks for all the advice! I felt like it would be a good buy for the money, but was not sure of all the little quirks of this year model. Thanks again and will let you know how it turns out!

Brake line issues are also fairly common. My 96 needed the brake lines replaced from the front to the rear as well as at the calipers. Check for a pull when braking and look for any brake fluid leaks (no matter how small). KDP is fairly easy but feels intimidating because of what all you have to do to get to it. Mine also needed a new tranny and front end.

But...the sound of a 4" straight piped 12v Cummins will put a tear in your eye. It sounds SOOOOO much better than the 06. My 96 was quirky, cranky when cold, billowed smoke like a freight train, and was hard to maneuver in tight places. I still curse the day I sold it.
