Discussion with a Chevy sales manager....

I was at a friend's 40th birthday party Saturday night. Having a few barley pops, listening to the band and enjoying myself when I met another friend of the birthday boy. Turns out he's a sales manager at a Chevy store. He is a real nice guy and I enjoyed talking to him.

The conversation eventually turned to cars and then trucks. I told him that I was going to buy an '03 Dodge/Cummins this fall and the sales pitch began….

"Before you buy, do yourself a favor and just drive a new D-Max/Allison."

I told him that the new engine was a definite improvement over previous Chevy diesels and that I've read some really good things about both the engine and tranny but the engine just doesn't have a track record yet and only time will tell. I also let him know how I felt about the new Chevy's design. How much I loved the new Dodge design ;D and the fact that the Cummins was a proven engine AND medium duty rated engine to boot. 8)

He conceded that the D-Max still has to get some reliable miles under its belt before the stigma of the earlier Chevy diesels is erased and that the Cummins is a great engine and has been a real winner for Dodge.

"But why do you think you need a medium duty engine?"

The discussion then turned into a medium duty vs. light duty and V8 vs. I6 debate. He won the argument for me when he said, "Look, if you feel you need a medium duty engine why don't you buy a GM Top Kick or a big Ford? You know you can get that same Cummins motor in the F-650….." Long pause. End of argument. ;D ;D ;D
Funny how they can talk themselves into a circle before they realize it....

Re:Discussion with a Chevy sales manager....

You gotta remember that GM butters his bread so he has to be loyal to them. My uncle works for GM (plant super) and he lives and breathes GM. ('65 vette, '67 vette, 60ish GTO )He saw my Acura NSX and was sorta cool to it (not the reaction that car usually got) Then I took him for a spin, all the while him telling me I shoulda got a 'vette. He admitted near the end of the drive that it was a superior car to the 'vette. "But don't tell my boss" he said.. He really gets ****** now that I pull up beside his truck and tell him it looks angry. He also said "off the record" that he dislikes the new Chev front end...FWIW

I've raced an NSX before in my dad's Vette. I wouldn't consider it a superior car. It put up one helluva fight. I guess you just can't beat good ole' American Muscle. ;D

Re:Discussion with a Chevy sales manager....

You are correct it won't win the HP wars. I did not buy the car for that purpose. But as far as fit, finish, and driving quality I have never ever driven anything like it before or after. If I was just concerned with straight ahead speed I woulda taken a Mustang and jammed a bunch of HP money in it. Go fast in a straight line but forget about the corners, about 50g less also. This car was comfortable enuff to be a daily driver, yet responsive enuff (for me anyway) to have fun with. Owned it 3 years, 40k and when I sold it got exactly what I paid for it, not putting a dime into it other than oil changes and two sets of rear tires. Only other American car I would consider would be a Viper, but with a V10 no fuel economy. Fuel economy has always been important to me. (why I now drive diesels) The NSX consistently gave me high 20's low 30 mpg. Honda was also the first company to perfect VTEC. Fords VTEC is a joke, dunno about GM. I just don't find the 'vette build quality to be "there" The NSX is not the car for everyone, but I sure did like mine. Sold it for an S2000. Big mistake. Only owned that car 9 months. Now I drive stinkin diesels :'( What have I done????

Re:Discussion with a Chevy sales manager....

I`m a mopar or nocar guy and I like to go fast as well, I own a 69 road runner 440 4spd the wife is hooked as well 73 charger 400 4spd all ride nice but there not road racers(the fast and foolish)but if you have the bucks too own a VIPER RT or GTS both are nice, and no one is going to drive cross country in one and still have kidneys yes there that stiff (expantion joints come to mind) then the price gas is the least of your worries this is not a flame but if you have the funds to own one of these driving machines then the price of gas is a non-issue taxes/insurance/upkeep/thieft rate these are!

Re:Discussion with a Chevy sales manager....

No prob 93w350 I enjoy a good car conversation like anybody else. See this is where the NSX shines. Insurance was 200 bucks more per year than my work-truck at the time, maintenance is virtually non existent on that car (very reliable, no huge 10k services etc.) Couple sets of rear tires (NSX ran 6mm toe in the rear) and oil changes (Honda oil filters about 5 bucks each, 5 qts. oil) No kidney bashing ride, it was one of the most comfortable cars you could ever drive. Took it on the road for 8 to 10 hour trips many many times. Set the cruise and relax... Only thing I really worried about was somebody keying it or smacking a fender. That aluminum body was huge $$ to repair, and the value of the car would plummet. Just because I can afford a car like that does not mean I don't watch my beans. Mebbe that is why I can afford a car like that....
To me overall cost of ownership is what I look at when purchasing a vehicle. Fuel is included in that calculation. Your roadrunner must be a sweet vehicle. Always liked them. Later..

Re:Discussion with a Chevy sales manager....

My dad's Vette is very nice around town. The ride is perfect and I have yet to find a corner that it can't handle. ;D Straight line is also amazing. It ain't the quickest, but it sure is fast. Best MPG I ever got out of that car was 27. I was crusing at 70mph for a while. I love that car. As a matter of fact, as soon as I get out of school (in another 1 hour or so) I'm going to go home, wash it, wax it, buff it, polish the chorme, clean the leather, clean the engine, fill the tank, and put it in the garage till tomorrow night. At which time, I will put on my tux, throw the top back, pick up my date, and had to prom. ;D I'm sure yall dont' care but I'm just a little excited so bear with me.

Enjoy the car and the prom, BigBlue. I did not go to public school in my junior and senior years, so I had no prom to go to. I don't regret it, but am always happy for those who do get to experience and enjoy it as my two sons did. Have a great time, and be safe please.

Young-uns :

Wait till you get a little older - that back seat action will not be near as attractive. You end up with enough aches and pains from normal activity to not want to have to resort to the contortions necessary for that kind of fun.

You adapt with age and figure out better ways to handle things. Buy a house, put in a pool with a TALL privacy fence, add a hot tub beside it and forget about back seats.

If you are gonna ride, then ride in style and comfort ;D
