Typical with 3rd gen engines. Has to do with injection events for smog control.

2 days??? Mine is dirty after the warm up to check the oil level once I've changed it.

It's a diesel. Diesels have lots of soot. Pretty normal.

Same here.
The 2004's and down are not as dirty but 04.5 and up get dirty right away. It is normal though.

they should pin this thread at the top. someone asks this question about every 10 days on here. nothing wrong with that though. it would just save starting new threads.
so the dirtier oil doesnt wear these engines out sooner?
dads older Ford stays really clean. we've always changed it at 5000kms though. thats not very many miles

Not true. My previous truck a 2000 3500 Cummins would run for 4000 miles before the oil started to turn dark. Up until then, you could see right thru it on the dip stick.

My 06 as stated, turns black right after the oil change at start up. Dodge and Cummins talk about dusting the engine, they should consider what's going on in the pan and the accumalation of soot and carbon.

If the 3rd injection event (EGR) is causing the problem, and the rings are not holding it, allowing soot and carbon to enter the pan, they have a problem with the rings and wear, as far as I'm concerned. This may cause compression problems down the road.

As stated above, The 03' and 04' trucks are no where near as bad as the 04.5 and up trucks.
