has anybody fabricated a different solenoid to shut off the fuel? i've been thru two of the stock ones in the last month. ive even tried modifying the stock ones. im thinking of some kind of 12 volt solenoid that would mount to the lever and a bracket. i can figure something out but was just wondering if there was any info out there of this mod. really dont want to do the cable thing.

It seems you have turned in your fuel screw quite a bit
I have 2 1992 CTDs and my factory solenoids cant take it. The rubber tip gets a chunk blown off it as soon as you poor the coals to it. Some guys have taken the hard rubber tip and rounded the concave area to a flat or convex area. I guess this has helped a lot.
I have removed the plunger all together. Some have installed pull cables on the shut down lever. If you want to get fancy, I have heard that some will buy a second gen solenoid and build a bracket and use that solenoid to operate the shutdown lever.

I think after you see the price of the second gen solenoid, the pull cable will look pretty good. But dont worry, the price to join the pull cable club aint that much.

ya i hear you on the sec gen fuel solenoid $$$.

another question i had was, when the fuel is shut off with standard solenoid does the fuel pressure from the lift pump just deadhead at the solenoid?

I'd just pull cable it. It's wayyy cheaper and you won't break it.

Dumb question of the day. Where on the pump is the shutdown lever?

If you look from the D side fender at the pump, you'll see a lever that is not attached to anything that can be pushed back towards the fire wall. That's the lever.

Old Smoky set his shutdown lever up with a spring and a 2nd gen 12 valve shutoff solenoid so it works off the key. The spring tries to shut the truck off, and the solenoid holds it back. Shut the key off, and the spring kills the truck.

Is there a down side to using the lever? What wears out and fails when the lever replaces the fuel solenoid?

Why not an easy to reach and replace solenoid valve in the supply fuel line?

I have found a solenoid made by Frank W. Murphy(manufacturer of oilfield electronic equipment and guages) that is designed to specifically kill various diesel engines. You can change the polarity of the solenoid, and make it normally open or closed. It comes with heim/ball joints, and a short "kill" cable. I got it for 35 bucks through my work, and it works great on the truck. I look tomorrow and find the part number for the solenoid.

I have a brand new 2nd gen shut off solenoid in a box with additional brakets or something. I thought mine was bad before, so, I bought a new one, but it wasn't the problem. I'm still using the one I had before. What kind of expensive prices are you guys talking about for these solenoids?
