Different Diff's???

The window sticker that was on my truck states I have 3.55 gears. Question: How many ratios were offered on Dodge second generation pickups? I've seen signatures where guys have 3.54's and wondered why there would be two options with such little difference in ratios?? Can anyone shead any light on this? Thanks!

The 3.55/3.54 is the same thing. I don't know why it's labeled different depending on what your looking at. Mine says 3.55 on the sticker, but when I changed the rear cover to the Mag-Hytec, it had a metal plate stamped 3.54.... :

The 4.10 was also available...

355 on the front diff and 354 on the rear. (Because the steering makes a slight difference in the turning radius). On a 2X4 it will be 354.

411 on the front and 410 on rear. 2X4 = 410

That would've been nice to know....

Of all the times I have seen this discussed, no one has mentioned that! At least not that I'm aware of...

Re:Different Diff's???

I have to admit...I'm very mechanically challanged, especially on today's vehicles. However, my son is a mechanic and explained that to me some years ago when I was worried that my PSD had two different ratios. (I thought surely I was going to grind one of them like hamburger... )

Stan

PS I got smart but he still drives a PSD ;D

I have many Senior Moments lately.

Maybe (evidently) I have it backwards 2X4 is a 3.55 & 4.11 ;D

Truth be known, I'm more than just mechanically challenged. I'm just all out challenged. :-[ :-[

Re:Different Diff's???

I think my window sticker said 3.55.

The sticker in my glove box says 3.54.

or vice versa.

All I know is it isn't a 4.10.

or would that be a 4.11 or a 4.09?

I like the sound of 3.54 better.

Re:Different Diff's???

The ratio listed is a rounded off number and I bet the real number derived by counting teeth would be somewhere in between. The front would be different due to the smaller size. the front also should be a 60F and turns backwards. I had a ford here and still have the 70F front axle, they were the same ratio front and back. One day I may have the heavy sucker set up for the dodge.

Now the military uses a lower neumerical ratio on the rear than the front to work with their automatic one way clutch for a transfer case. When the rear would slip in the mud the one way clutch would lock up and the front would pull. When the rear would gain traction, the clutch was supposed to let go, often they would jam, they are a sprague clutch just like an automatic has for second gear.
