Difference in VINs? (concerning engine)

Hey Guys...

In my searching for a new to me truck(2003 or 2004), I have noticed two different VIN characters for a Cummins. In position 8, either a "C" or a "6" denotes the diesel engine. So my question for you guys, is whats the difference, if any, in those engines?

It seems like I have seen both digits in both years...but i can only confirm both in 2003 at the moment.

Thanks for all your help!

Scott

The C is the HO version of the motor and in 03 it should be 305HP The Vin 6 is the standard motor.

ah, ok, cool. So.....which one do i want? lol

Seriously though....whats the difference in the HO and Standard? Does one get better mileage, or is one coupled to a different tranny? Is one more generally desired than the other??

The only difference that I can think of is a truck with a 6 in position 8 could have the 47 or 48re transmission in it depending on when it was built, this would be only for the 03's if I remember correctly.

xD7KU28C

so what HP does the standard motor have? anybody know? and is there a down side to the 47RE vs. the 48RE?

just found this in another post:

2003 H.O. Federal Emissions: 305HP/555lb.ft. Only available with NV5600
2003.5 The 47RE was replaced by the 48RE automatic transmission and available with the H.O.

2004 S.O. Calif. Emissions: 235HP/460lb.ft. Available with NV4500 or 48RE
2004 H.O. Federal Emissions: 305HP/555lb.ft. Available with either NV5600 or 48RE

So if i am reading this correctly, and i find a 2003 auto C vin, that means it would be a 48RE, and if its an 03 auto 6 vin, then it would be a 47RE? Is that right?

Another thing I can't figure out from searching, is which one is better? Is there one that is better/more reliable than the other?

Thanks again for all the help, guys!

The 48 is basically an updated version of the 47. Better in my opinion. More clutches per drum and better shifting overall IMO. The SO has 250hp and the HO was 305 .
