difference between cummins and powerjoke

In an earlier post somebody mentions that the two engines were way different and I would like to know how other than the obvious differences. Particularly what makes the cummins so much better than the powerjoke. I know they sound altogether different when you are next to one. Also my girlfriends 11 year old son is a big ford fan (all he really knows is what he hears his dad say) and I can always get him going about it. He now thinks his dad has the baddest powerjoke made. It's a stock 06, his second one since he had so much trouble with his first 06 that they gave him a new one. I thought that would be proof enough why my Dodge is better. I'm sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but I would like to know the technical differences. Thanks

Not very technical, but an inline six is always more efficient, and has 33% less moving parts than his V8. Less moving parts is less crap to break and less crap to work on. For something simple? The grid heaters on the cummins are superior to the glow plugs on a stroke. Just put both trucks in a -20 degree climate without being plugged in overnight and see which one starts the next day.

Also metion that the Cummins in our truck is classified "medium duty" as opposed to "Light Duty" of the ford. The cummins ISB you turn on every day is also used in trucks up to 60,000GWV

Check these sites out
Powerstroke: http://www.tsb.com/TSB/20/062063ec.html
Cummins: http://www.tsb.com/TSB/17/0617a3f3.html

BOTH for 2006 2500 4x4's. Notice the Dodge cummins has barely any recalls/notices for it and the rest are for the truck.
Also note that the ford has almost all of them with "Engine" before it telling you that their engine sucks.

Stroke, that speaks volumes right there.

I was gonna say Ford own Cummings and they want to make the powerstroke better instead of giving it to us.

223 - Its the simplicity of the design. When you open the hood you can see the engine top and bottom from both sides too. On the Ford you can't tell where the engine starts or ends for all of that other mess on it.

Somebody publish some drag results, some sled results, some happy camper results.

Again not a very technical response.

It says something when there has been no major mod.s to the 5.9 other than the head configuration and fuel delivery system in +- 20 years

ford: 6.9 na, 7.3 na, 7.3 turbo 7.3 ps, 6.0 ps, who knows what is next
chevy/gmc: 350 converted(HAHA , 6.2 , 6.5 , 6.6 and more to come
dodge 5.9

if it aint broke don't screw with it!!!!!!!!!!

Post like this are pointless, if you dont like them, dont buy them instead of posting and cloging space about them being crap. I think both chevy and ford are outselling dodge so their doing something right. I got the chance to drive a new LBZ the other day and i was more impressed with that then my 5.9, if i didnt have so much money into my truck id get a 6.0 or a 6.6.

Did you happen to read the part "if I didn't"? My truck left me stranded in BFE Utah, my brothers 6.0 is making over 600 on fuel and 700 on the gas. He hasnt had one breakdown, although many of them have their share of problems, but whats the point complaining about it, expecially since you dont even own one?

There are differences in both, some of what makes a Cummins a good area. The one about Cummins is a 6 cylinder vrs. the powerstroke which is an 8 cylinder.

Cummins has 33% less moving parts than the powerstroke
Cummins has 50% more surface bearing area. Mind you it's a 6 cylinder and has more bearing surface, more surface area, stronger motor.
Cummins reputation, the 5.9 has been around a long time, some small change have been made, but not like a new size, or new type
Cummins is a medium duty motor, not a light duty motor. There made for big time usages.
Cummins has reputation other than trucks, Boats, buses, trash trucks, a lot have the same 5.9 liter cummins in them

I'm not bashing chevy/ford. They are good motors rev fast, and are fast trucks. However while in college, we've been to engine manufacturing plants. Go see how a powerstroke is made, then see how a cummins block is made. You'll notice the power strokes are made in a automotive type area, where the cummins is a factory, boring out, it's a heavy duty shop, nothing is light duty.

Both and all motors can go a long happy life. How you treat them is just as important as the construction of the motor. All motors will have a problem here or there (nothing is perfect). A guy on here had a jurnal bearing go, does that mean cummins sucks, no. Yeah powerstroke and chevy have issues. Most have issues, however some have more. I noticed a statement about Recals and TSB's. yes cummins has the lowest, HOWEVER, look at Total 5.9 recals, outa boats, buses, trucks, all that, and the number is the same, so yes out of 1 million cummins motors, they have like 1 recall, where powerstroke has like 0ver 20 recals, just on the truck motors.

If I was gonna have a race truck I'd own a chevy diesel, faster rev's, and faster truck, more gears ect. For towing I'm sticking to the cummins. While the rest of the dodge body parts and cruddyness are behind I'll be riding the engine down the road = )

TAS, not arguin, I agree with everything you said except for a race truck. If you are serious about hard core racin, ford or chevy will rarely keep up. Not cause they are any better or worse than cummins but the aftermarket just isnt quite there for them like it is for us.

stock for stock and even lightly modded vs lightly modded the chevy's will walk away from the cummins and sometimes the fords

when it comes to high HP numbers, low 13 second trucks, the cummins is unmatched.

I had 6.0L F450 4x4. I had to sell it with 53K miles on it. It was in the shop constantly. Had oil leaks from 15K miles to when I sold it. The upper and lower ball joints had to be replace at 45K. It had a coolant leak, and the fuel pump went out in my driveway and I had to have it towed. That was the last straw. Rear main seal replaced 3 times, and front crank seal replaced twice. It required so much shop time under warranty, that I was scared to death to keep it past 100K. Before I sold it they had it for two months trying to fix oil leaks. I could not honestly recommend a Ford 6.0L to anyone, even though I like their trucks. Now I'm stuck with all of these stinkn' Ford Truck hats in my closet . Nice truck, great tranny, scary motor. I'm happy to have the Cummins.

My signature is below. I do own one of them currently and 3 previously.

The point was the guy asked a question on a predominantly Dodge site so he got Dodge opinions. And got one from a Ford owner, go figure.

some more tech facts came from Cummins web were "the 5.9 Cummins as used in our Dodge trucks has a 350000 + miles fleet average before overhaul" compared to 200000 mile predicted service life Ford has for their 6.0 engine. Cummins is the icon both GM and Ford shoot for in engine reliability.
Right now the 6.0 has been a dismal failure per Fords own admission [500000 million dollars in warranty claims]. Thats the reason Fords new 6.4 is hitting the market hopefully will get some of their badly sagging 2500/3500 truck sales back.
Cummins is the icon Ford and GM shoot for. Fords loosing ground but GM's DMAX is proving out much more reliable than the 6.0 PSD.
I refuel at two different truck stops on I-44 that has a lot of 2500/3500 commercial/hotshot folks that refuel and most with hi milage PSD's are going to Dodge for the Cummins engine. Cummins fuel and maintenence costs are lower than the PSD which helps their bottom line. Quite a few DMAX operators and are growing ,but I have yet met a Dodge/Cummins owner that says he will move to a PSD for hauling and working.
Show him the TDR mag with several one million mile Dodge/Cummins trucks that have pulled trailers for all those miles by old guys like me. For working/hauling/towing the Cummins has/can not be beat by GM or Ford.

Couple of other thoughts. My '03 6.0L had 325hp and 560lbs torque. My Cummins is more fuel efficient and has 325hp and 610lbs torque. I'm not sure what I am giving up by going to the Cummins.
