Difference between '96 and '98 12v crank sensors?

Hi all,

Some time ago I was trying to fix my '96-no tach, speedo, and apparently no alternator charging through the normal charging circuit. (someone put an old style mopar voltage regulator in there to get it charging)

Naturally, the first thing I think of with these symptoms is a bad crank sensor. I checked the gap, and it was ok. So, I tried to substitute the sensor off my '98 12v, and then discovered that the plug was different between the two. I thought I'd read several times that the sensors were the same on all the p pumped 12v trucks. Guess not?
