Diesel power for Dakar rally.

Here is a snip from a motoring news article. You can read more about it at the VW news site:

Hope they do well and help to promote the use of diesel.
I also noticed in yesterday's news that Brazil are aiming at becoming the world leader in biodiesel. That disappoints me I was hoping the the USA would take the lead in that.

SNIP:
Volkswagen is making its biggest effort yet to become the first manufacturer to win the Dakar rally with a diesel-powered car. It has entered five TDI-powered Volkswagen Race Touareg 2 cars for the 2006 event, which starts in Lisbon, Portugal on December 31.

They will be piloted by a team of world-class drivers including double World Rally champion Carlos Sainz, newly crowned Cross-Country World Cup champion Bruno Saby and Jutta Kleinschmidt, the only woman to win the Dakar Rally.

A life time dream to compete in a Dakar ralley. It would seem Diesel power will work well in the small rigs. I get a kick out of watching the support rigs a blarin across the desert full tilt and blowin black smoke.

I agree - I really liked the fact that they created a 'support rig' type of class for those big trucks - they're awesome. I really enjoy Speed Channel's coverage of the race.

Didn't BMW and/or VW enter a couple of diesels in the race last year? I thought they did....
