There may be an issue or not , I do not know what yrs the dipstick had differant levels , on yours does oil filter goes in a can thats part of the truck ?
The reason I ask is with the spin on filters you can get them in a few sizes , if yours is not a spin on then thats not an issue , some cheap filters , both the spin & cartrage may have less filtering meda in them , put that together with the varyable amounts recomended 11+filter , 11 1/2 + ect , then theres been some recomended longerdipstick or a new mark it makes confusing .
Maybe I should back up , is this a new truck to you ? a new problem ?
If its the same old every thing you may want to get an oil anylisis , leaking injector , coolant - that should have condisation on dipstick , oil fill cap ect.
Just some ideas till some one with your truck chimes in .

Do you idle it for long periods of time? Could be diesel washing past the rings or a leaky injector.

If you have fuel in the oil, you would smell it. I do the 12 quart fill up too, so no problems there. My stick never reads above the safe line though, unless it had just been running. That would throw of the readings from the oil sloshing around. That's why you should check the oil at least 15 minutes after shutdown.

If it is fuel you will smell it and if it happens to be fuel it is most likely a leaky injector "o" ring.

Fuel in oil

If it was me I would buy a sample kit and send it out to a lab they will check all aspects of the sample, them they will tell you everything that is in it,that way you will know for sure if there is a problem no guessing. I use Ams oil and the bypass filter setup and used the same oil for over 20,000 before they told me to change It.

20K is all you're getting out of that high dollar Amsoil and bypass filter? I would think you should be closer to 50K like that.

I'm going between 12K and 16K on mine and I just use Rotella. I have never received a bad report in 8 years on this engine.

I have the same problem with my truck: on the dipstick it reads ??? 2 gal. high on an oil change with rotila of 600 mile; I finished driving to my destination at about 800 miles change the oil and only had three gal. come out.? I have had this problem for a while now and everyone I talk to is stumped. some say head gasket, injector, and my favorite " you don't know how to change oil or read a dipstick."... 01 dually also if you take and drop some oil on a peace of card board the diesel will run out farther than the oil and you will see a ring around the oil spot of a bit liter color.
