Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)
OK........enlighten me. I just read that over 2500 DEF fueling stations will be coming on line in 2010. Looks like it pertains to new Class-8 big trucks. Will this eventually be something we all will have to deal with?

The 2010 emission laws require another big drop in NOX output. Many engine manufacturers are going to urea injection to accomplish this task. Urea will be injected into the exhaust stream right in front of a reactor in the exhaust system. This reactor will use the urea to break down NOX into "less harmful" components. The urea is not pure it is a mixture and the generic name for the stuff is D.E.F. Supposedly using the urea will allow the engine to use less EGR and restore some of the fuel economy that was lost due to the current emissions equipment. Oddly though our beloved 6.7 already meets the 2010 emissions standards, so I guess it won't get a DEF setup.

The high end car manufactures are using it in some of their diesels. I see it in BMW, Audi, MB, and VW dealerships. Our 09 Jetta does not use it because it can meet the standard without the urea, but VW isn't putting the 2.0 TDI in the Passat or Tiguan because they don't want to redesign them for a urea tank and they can't meet the emissions requirement without it.

The urea itself should be about the same that most farmers apply on their fields, however the DEF itself is not the same. The urea must be pure and is a 32.5% solution in deionized water. If you were to use DEF that didn't use deionized water the DCU or ECU depending what the mfg is using will derate the engine power until the bad DEF is gone. The nice thing is that even though DEF is $3-4+ per gallon its only around a 3% ratio to fuel, so the tank won't need to be refilled for a few thousand miles.
Pilot or Loves were supposed to have DEF at the pump at 100 of their stations by the end of July this year. I don't know if they ever made the date or not. I know I have not come across a station with it yet.

Isn't urea just pee? So now you can take that cute little gal on a date and kill the truck on a lonely back road and tell her you ran out of urea..... then ask her to drop her skivvies and help you fill the tank!!

The big truck stops like Pilot and Flying J are putting in urea pumps. We dont have to worry about it, the current 6.7 meets Tier II Bin V requirements without it. The Ford and Chevy boys will be using urea.
