Diesel exhausts do cause cancer, says WHO

Exhaust fumes from diesel engines do cause cancer, a panel of experts working for the World Health Organization says.

It concluded that the exhausts were definitely a cause of lung cancer and may also cause tumours in the bladder.

It based the findings on research in high-risk workers such as miners, railway workers and truck drivers.

However, the panel said everyone should try to reduce their exposure to diesel exhaust fumes.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer, a part of the World Health Organization, had previously labelled diesel exhausts as probably carcinogenic to humans.

IARC has now labelled exhausts as a definite cause of cancer, although it does not compare how risky different carcinogens are. Diesel exhausts are now in the same group as carcinogens ranging from wood chippings to plutonium and sunlight to alcohol.

It is thought people working in at-risk industries have about a 40% increased risk of developing lung cancer.

Dr Christopher Portier, who led the assessment, said: "The scientific evidence was compelling and the Working Group's conclusion was unanimous, diesel engine exhaust causes lung cancer in humans.

"Given the additional health impacts from diesel particulates, exposure to this mixture of chemicals should be reduced worldwide."

The impact on the wider population, which is exposed to diesel fumes at much lower levels and for shorter periods of time, is unknown.

Dr Kurt Straif, also from IARC, said: "For most of the carcinogens when there is high exposure the risk is higher, when there is lower exposure the risk is lower."

There have been considerable efforts to clean up diesel exhausts. Lower sulphur fuel and engines which burn the fuel more efficiently are now in use.

The UK Department of Health said: "We will carefully consider this report. Air pollutants are a significant public health concern, we are looking at this issue as part of our plans to improve public health."

Stan you are correct.This was recognized as a problem in this country some time ago.As a result,diesel exhaust capture was instituted in the late '80's to protect the firefighter.The WHO is late to the party.

I saw the story and have questions.


I have read the cancer rates OUTSIDE of the USA are very low.
Is that right?

Europe has as many diesel vehicles as gasoline, with lower emission standards. Why is this?

Why, if diesel is so bad, are there fewer cancers?

I realize foods can be causes of cancer too.

Maybe we all need to live next door to all of our needs.
Food, entertainment, bars, churches, and diesel stores so we can walk to them.

I'm pretty sure Europe has tighter diesel emission standards than the US does and they are slated to get even tighter.
Europe has two more tiers to go, for onroad vehicles the US has reached the last tier.

Life causes cancer!!! Any one still living has a 100% higher chance of getting cancer than those not still living. Cases of dead people with cancer have been attributed to life before death.

You are right Infidel. I lived for several years in the UK and if you have a diesel there it had better be squeaky clean or you ain't going any where with it. They are VERY tight on emission standards.

I've been thinking - I came to the conclusion that anything coming from some sort of government body is cancerous in and of itself.

Everything seems to case cancer now days...Maybe reading DTR causes cancer...

Now a days it doesn't matter if your heathty or now...I lost so many freinds in there late 40's,early 50's from cancer and heart issue, and many never smoked or dranked..It just doesn't make sence anymore..

Believe it or not, I think you're onto something. The environment is much cleaner now than it was 40 or 50 years ago. Theoretically cancer and heart disease rates should be down, but they aren't. Deaths are under control somewhat due to expensive and invasive medical intervention.

Of course one factor is that due to all this intervention, people are living longer and having more issues. Eventually everyone must die, so statistically it looks bad because folks survive one crisis that would have off'd them in the past, and of course eventually succumb to something else.

I think the biggest factor is probably the increased stress on us all these days, mostly caused by the machinations of government.

I think the government needs to realize that people die, it's just the way things work. If we eliminate cancer in all forms, then the risk will be from strokes. Or heart attacks. Or something else. People cannot be made 100% healthy. And from what I've seen, the people that DO manage to live into their 80's or 90's aren't all that capable of 'living' in my opinion. 'Living', to me, is being able to do what you want to do, not just what your body will let you do, and feeling well enough, with enough energy, to do it. I don't want to live into my 80's if all I can do for activity and entertainment is take a slow walk or sit in a chair and watch life go by.

We are protecting ourselves way more than we really should be. Kids are developing allergies and presenting with other serious health issues due, in part, to the fact that they aren't being exposed to the things a lot of us were when we were kids. Parents have an absolute fit these days if their kid plays outside and gets dirty. Heck, when I was a kid, I ATE dirt!
