Did I harm my limited slip?

I blew a rear tire a while back on my 2006 2500 4x4. I have 285 75 R17 BFG's on there and had to put on the spare which is the slightly smaller stock 235 85 R17. I then had to drive it about 120 miles to get to where I could get another jack and change the spare to the front.

Then I got a new tire once I got home. Did I toast my LS during that 100+ miles with it on the rear? Is there a test I can do to check and make sure it is OK?

I've heard about jacking up the rear end and rotating the tire to see that both rear tires spin in the same direction> Then I've read some conflicting threads that say you can't do this with this kind of gear driven LS. What gives?

I don't think you have anything to worry about, unless you feel something weird happening?

If the vehicle still moves ( drives ) the limited slip is fine.

I don't think so. Just a thought though, if it were to happen again, you might want to put the odd tire on the front. You'd have to change two but the time would be cheaper than a rear end.

Sorry, didn't mean for it to sound like that! When I went to school on the 10 1/2 and 11 1/2 rear ends we talked about the limited slip. They are helical cut gears and the comment was made " how do you know if its broke or not". and the instructor said if the vehicle will drive, the limited slip is o.k. He further stated that you would "know" if it broke. The design of it is IF it were to break ( even one gear ) it wouldn't move. I looked for that in the manual, but couldn't find it off hand. I'll keep looking though.

Ok thanks, that makes sense. So does that mean that they can't really wear out and gradualy lose their effectivness over time like a clutch pack LS?

No, as long as you have a good fluid in there it should "theoretically" never wear the limited slip out. Might have to replace some bearings someday, but nothing really to wear.

Step on the brake hard, mash the skinny pedal on the right and let go of the brake in 3 - 5 seconds. If there is 2 black lines on the road, I would say it is all right! 8*)

Sometime a picture helps.

8*) YMMV - Skinner.
