Is diablo sport a predator?
I know someone who has a predator for his 6.0L diesel ford. He says its best in the world because it doesnt leave a trace. He said it doesnt use pressure or timing to give more power. he said it does something by making a more complete burn. As a Journeyman Diesel Mechanic I cant see how this is true. I can see the trace thing but every tuner/downloader/pressure box/chip etc either has to use timing and or pressure to accomplish more power or fuel mileage.
Am i right?
So is this predator box the best there is?

my experience
i have a dr performance predator (model#2118) rated @ 120hp/200tq. it is a very nice piece; i stack it with a PPE excelerator. i think the hp/tq ratings are bogus to begin with, so i think it might add maybe at most 70hp. i still like it. i dont know if you are talking about dr performance predator or diablosport predator (puck) module. my piece does not affect the rail pressure but optomizes air/fuel mixture and alters timing. love it and have seen about 2 mpg better than stock. almost 4mpg w/ stack.

sure it alters timing but how can it optimize fuel air mixture? Theres no carburetor on diesels.you either add more or less fuel at lower or higher rail pressures and or alter timing. theres no other way you can gain HP,TORQUE or MPG without either of these.
Sure you can add a AFE stage 2 air filter and or open exhaust but thats it.(specially shaped intake or exhaust manifold for better air flow)

I had a predator and the power was good but it did not do what it was advertised to do. No shift on the fly (for '06 models), rough idle, and it DOES leave a trace.
By the way..... you guys are talking about 2 different things. Sallyman is talking about the DiabloSport Predator and berman is talking about the Dr. P predator.

To answer your question though the Predator your buddy is using is a Diablo Sport Predator which is a flash programmer. He has the ability to load a lot of different tunes in there some of which are just duration and some which use duration and timing and so on and so forth.

Actually, duration is the most common way of increasing power. Duration is the length of time the injector stays open. The longer it stays open the more fuel that gets in the cylinder with no rail pressure increase. Next, is the timing at which the injector is opened and/or closed which is different from the length of time it stays open or duration. The last is increased rail pressure which increases the amount of fuel that goes in the cylinder in the same amount of time the injector stays open with no increase in duration or change in timing. Also remember, that more fuel in these engines promotes more boost. Timing is generally used to control the efficincey or burn inside the cylinder once duration is added to the cycle. It can aid in cooling of the EGT as well as picking up some MPG's and certainly more power.

You missed one option and that is the number of events. Not many out there add or subtract events per cycle but it is one of the options.
Sally - don't read too much into the word timing, yes duration can be seen as timing modification but it is not the definition of timing. Number of events can also be seen as a timing change but again it is not the correct definition of a timing change.

The Predator from DS makes very nice power but with a stock turbo you will probably see high EGTs which you are already having problems with.
I think they finally got the key count issue fixed so it is less traceable. I had one on my 07 and the power was incredible but I only bought it because it was inexpensive. I'm sure you already know what most guys think is the "Best" downloader out there. Smarty......

with the high hp tunes for the diablo pred, they use all three, timing, duration and presure, but they use lots of duration which makes it run hot.im happy with my pred, never given me a prob and makes some wicked power and the key thing doesnt affect me,no more waranty anyways.
