Detroit v6, allison combo in pickup.
I was talking to a guy I know that has a late 80 style chevy with a detroit two stroke v6 in it with an allison 6-speed auto and a jake. He claims it's 1800 ft./lbs.? The guy did everthing right, reinforced the frame where he notched to clear stuff and the install looks clean. The truck was daily driver but now he doesn't use it. He built it to sled pull only to realise he couldn't really compete anywhere. The body is rough but better than mine. He's asking 1500 for the whole truck, is it worth buying? Even if I didn't want to run the truck I wonder if I could use the tranny behind my cummins. I know nothing about those engines. But thought it might be cool. I know nothing about the reliability, mileage, power, ease of repair (claimed 19 highway 14 city). What do you guys think? I thought it might be nice even just for the tranny. I don't know what tranny it is but I know it isn't the 1000, it has huge hydraulic lines coming off the side of it. It also has an in bed tank that's almost full with about 100 gal in it.

Are you thinking you only want it for the tranny? I wonder if it's a 53 series detroit? They all seem heavy and thirsty for what they are. But reliable and easy to work on, and easy to get parts for. I saw a 6-71 in a Ford pickup one time. It was fun to see, and it drove OK, but really only a novelty. The Cummins is so much better. I am curious about that tranny too, it must be big.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I don't see how a naturally aspirated v6 would make that kind of power without spinning way faster than one could ever dream of. We had an old 903 cummins v8 NA in a big tractor on the farm that I used to work on. The only thing that engine liked to burn more than fuel was oil! It used to shoot foot high flames out the stacks after running hard for a bit in the field, not very effiecient. They ended up swapping it with an 855 inline 6 turbocharged and that thing would run circles around it on way less fuel... and oil. That 903 sure sounded mean though. The tranny still has me intrigued though, if I could pick it up for whatever the tranny is worth, whatever that is.

Probably a 6v53...maybe 220hp or so, and should spin out to about 3200RPM. I would think in a pickup it could get about the same mileage as our Cummins with an OD Allison!
For $1500, I'd say go for it...if nothing else, they're LOAD, smokey, and a whole lotta fun!
