Deep trans pan - need pickup xtend?
Please all internet knowledgable.... let me know.
I bought this pan PML Pan for my trans. I was getting the filter/fluid today and for the second time, from a different parts guy at a different dealership I got the warning.... extend the pickup tube when you put that pan in - you don't want to be pulling fluid off the top. He said I "should" have an extension for the tube in the kit of parts. The pan just has bolts and a plug in the kit though.
The first time I heard this I'd just mentioned the pan idea to the a counter guy as an idea and he volunteered this warning - I had not gotten the pan so I did not think about it. Now that I've heard the same advice twice?? ... and I've got the pan and know I don't have an extension.
My thinking was that since the dipstick is the same length, if I fill to the full mark I'm sure to submerge the filter again, no matter how much fluid is under it. Additionally, for any reasonable flow rate, the fluid will circulate in the pan and where I pull it into the filter should be of no consequence.
Or... should I be concerned and looking for an extension?

Drawing fluid from the bottom of the pan will make for better circulation, and therefore better heat transfer to the external fins. But the PML pans adds only two quarts of capacity, so that effect will probably not be noticeable. Mag-Hytec makes a "double-deep" pan (+4 quarts) that does come with an extension tube. I'm not sure about their standard (+2 quart) pan.

davelinde,
Get the stock filter and bolt it on you'll be OK. The 2 extra quarts gets you all the extra cooling without having to add the extra fluid some pans do, and the way the pan is built you don't have to deal with getting that extension and stuff to operate correctly. Straight from PML. This is one of the main reasons we sell the PML products, same degree of cooling and saves the customer a lot in fluid costs especially if you're going to synthetics etc.

Fluid cost savings.
Kyle Graham,
Depends, a lot of the guys go to the high dollar synthetics (like Schaeffer etc) when they add a PML pan, so at 7.00-10.00 a quart it's is a significant cost over the life of the trans if you do fluid changes per the Dodge reccomended intervals etc.
