Decided to go Diesel

Hi everyone, I am currently deployed to Iraq and have decided to get a 07 Mega cab 5.9 when i get back in Nov, I think I want a 6 speed, I am still undecided on that one.. I am pretty rough on my vehicles this one will be no exception, It might see the dragtrip a couple of times just to see, It will be in the dirt and mud and air! I will also be driving it everyday back and forth to work..I am shooting for 500 reliable whp. I don't even know if this is the right section to post. Just wanted to hear the opinion on how to get the power and 6 speed vice a auto.

First, thanks for serving. As far as auto or manual, neither will hold 500hp and play for very long. You need to figure on a tranny upgrade for the auto or a clutch for the manual.

Ditto the thanks for serving.....for heavy duty offroad, plan on a suspension upgrade - carly or thuren being the preferred for the hardcore offroaders.....they race baja 1000 with them so sky's the limit.

If you want to drag race, a 6 speed is a handicap. Although there are tricks and some are very successful, they still won't match an auto. However, it is a lot easier and cheaper (by way of a proper clutch) to make the stick reliable over the auto. 500 hp is doable without a lot of mods... read some of the older threads on the subject and you will learn a lot.

Thank you for your service there soldier... now get home safe and in one piece-- that is an order!

Thanks for all the kind words...I guess I should have put down my plans so I can hear your opinions. Suspension will be Carli 2.65 bilstein or the 3.0 haven't decided yet. I want a reliable truck from reading I gather that the 6 speed is better on fuel and a good clutch it will hold up to some abuse, also a well built auto cost alot.. I am a ground up kind of guy so it will be suspension tranny then power. I also want a bigger tank to extend my range a bit looking at the aero 60 gal tanks. A for drag racing that will be more of a jut to see how fast I am type of deal. Now I have been looking for a 6 speed but they are hard to find so an auto might be in my future..

Alright, I'll bite. If you want to beat a truck to death, any brand will do but I'd suggest a Ford. Mostly because I drive a Dodge. If you want to spend time on the drag strip, the auto suits most folks better. The six speed in these trucks is not a racing transmission, it's built for towing. There are some folks who have made it move pretty quick but it's easier to get speed out of an auto. If you put 500 hp under the hood you're going to be hard on parts but you already said you're going to be hard on parts.
