Dealer wants to put Castrol SynTec in my '03??
Time for first oil change and I asked the dealer what oil they use. Answer was "Castrol Syntec."
***,O? First, it's not cheap oil, but it isn't API CI-4, it's something like CF. Second, it doesn't come in the recommended weight, and third, does Dodge not know that Cummins recommends NOT using synthetic oil for about 20K?
I am surprised at the lack of knowledge displayed by my dealer's service department.

Castrol does have a Castrol Syntec Blend Truck 15w/40 that's API CH-4. I think it's new. www.castrolusa.com

If that is the SynTec the dealer plans to use, well, it's close, but.......no cigar.
I would think Cummins put the CI-4 recommendation for this engine on it to be followed, not ignored.

Unfortunately the "D" in Dealer often stands for Dummy. Especially if they are a five star Dummy.
I'd say they are either really ignorant or they think you are and are just trying to ring up the cash register.

Dont know much about Castrol. I do know there are a lot of choices in oil (Rotella, Delo, Valvoline, Aimsoil, RP) that are specifically designed for diesel engines. I would not take a chance on putting anything in my crankcase that would not have the correct rating.
Just my humble .02 worth.

Wait until 30K to switch to synthetics. I think Delvac is the only synthetic out with a CI-4 rating as of this posting. Use a good Dyno oil for now like Delo-400 or Rotello or Valv. Premium Blue 15-40 with the CI-4 rating.
I also like the Fleetgaurd filters with stratapore (LF16035) better than the Mopar OEM, they cost 2 bucks more but are defantly a notch better than OEM.
I would stay away from that dealer......if you want a better oil change try a local Cummins dealer or do-it yourself the 3rd Gens are way easier than the earlier trucks
