dealer flash kills computer
i was having hard start issues with my 99 truck. local mechanic recommended taking it to the dealer and have it re-flashed. took it to dealer to have this done, and for some reason the new flash wouldn't load after the old one was deleted. now the dealer is saying i need to replace the computer, and guess what, they say they won't pay for it. has anyone else had this happen?? any suggestions on replacing the computer ??? needless to say, i'm not very happy about this situation . truck was at least running when i took it in, now nothing. service manager says "well sometimes that happens with a re-flash" well noboby told me that, or i might not have had it done..........

huh??
let me check the facts..
it was hard starting..
took to the dealer..
dealer tried to flash the computer....
now it needs a new one..
dealer won't pay..
check..yep sounds like time for a lawyer..
AND THAT just rubs be WRONG..why cannot a dealer own up to a mistake..
they happen..they could just fix it..why must L's be involved..
maybe its time for cement shoes for the dealer service dept...
please don't opt for the last part..
I think the letter on a lawyers letter head would be enough.

My mentality... I wouldnt even think about replacing it myself. The dealer is responsible. What part of TX are you in? You need a posse to knock some sense into em'?

I'm afraid I'm with everyone else on here .... the dealer's guy screwed it up, so either the tech eats it or the dealer does.
I was in a similar situation over the summer and I'm still weighing the pro's and con's of suing the dealership.

Go as I say, "up the food chain until you find something edible!"
In this case, the GM is looking like the Palates du Juour!
A chat with the GM should straighten this right out if he/she has an IQ above "Duh!"
And no, you're not mistaken in your assumption.
They have a duty to know the parameters of the equipment they're dealing with and the proper means to deal with it.
Going to a dealership is the same as going to any other "professional."
You expect them to know what they're doing and do it correctly.
If they foul it up, it's in their court to fix it.
Keep track of ALL COSTS if you go this route.
Rental cars, time lost from work, repair/replacement cost, etc.
All of this would go into my lawsuit if I were forced to go this route.
Sure, no one want's to hammer a tech, but frankly, it's their responsibility to know what they're doing. That's why I go to "professionals."
A few years back, I had some work done on my Landcruiser.
It was done at a professional shop with ASE certified techs.
A few days later, the engine seized
It was determined that it was due to negligence on the part of one of the techs.
The owner of the shop is a good friend of mine, which actually made it a bit more difficult to deal with, because I felt as though I needed to balance a friendship with business. That's a tough balancing act.
The bottom line is, he said, "that's why we carry insurance", and without missing a beat, started looking for a new (rebuilt) engine.
I use a tax professional to handle my routine taxes, an IRS pro for the tax ho's, and an attorney for my business legal needs.
I expect each of them to know what they're doing and do it correctly!
Foul it up and they'll need to fix it.
They each carry liability insurance and E&O coverage (as do I).
I'll bet the dealership does too.
I deal with similar situations almost daily now, and find, as I did while in law enforcement, that many of the matters that end up in court, could have been resolved with a little communication, maybe at a higher lever, but still, communication.
Again, I think you're on the right track by going up the corporate ladder first.

i have an 01,needs a new (diff)ecm.i'v been doing a lot of looking and found sevral that will fit your truck on dodge cummins forum classifieds.not trying to push another forum just trying to help.i agree with the the others tho the dealer needs to stand behind their work.what is come for service at your own risk?thats a bunch of bs.hope it works out for ya.

get it fixed and pay for it with credit card and right after that call the credit card company and tell them you want to dispute charges, which will have you paying not a cent or being charged interest until this dispute is resolved..Document in writing everything that is said by you and to you and date it

I went through the exact thing at the dodge dealer in Athens, TX. I went online and ordered the PCM which he gave me the number for, and then when it didn't work was told " Oh, it was the ECM"
Anyway had an independent shop put in a used ECM and it is fine. The ******* offered to fix it at warrenty cost. Funny thing is I buy my parts from them as a jobber and it was the same price!! Needless to say , they don't even change my oil now.

I would agree w/all above. Keep going up till you get the answer your looking for. I priced ecms last wk.... $264@ rock auto plus the cost of dealer reflash. Good luck!

For whatever reason, the KO1 emissions reflash procedure fried my ECM. Dodge has had some issues with this apparently. The tech was apologetic but stressed he followed procedure.
Dealer opened up a case with STAR. STAR approved a new ECM and another small part. New ECM on Dodge.
They owe you the part and install.
Good luck!
