Dana 70 rear axle

What spline is our rears? I have a dana 70 (I believe) from a 1989 W250 with 3.07's. Its an open rear, I want to try and find a limited-slip diff to put into it. I emailed Randy's ring and pinion and they told me that I cannot buy it as a drop in unit. They did ask me what spline I had, I wasnt sure. Also being mine has 3.07's is it a different diff/carrier than say would be in a 1992-93 with 3.54? They seem to be a little more common to buy one for. Thanks, Robert

Should be 35 spl, AFAIK the carrier will work out of a 70 its just the gearset that is different.

I only asked that since some carriers say they will only work with certain gearsets and up. Thanks broke

The later D70U was 32 spline, easiest way to Identify is if its got bolts retaining the axleshaft it will be 32spl If its got studs with nuts and cone locks it will be 35spl.

It has the nuts and cones holding the axles in. So it has 35 splines. Atleast now I know I cannot use the later 92-93 units. Thanks Broke

hey-Hey!!!,
The carrier is the same for 3.07, 3.54 and 4.10 gears in the D70's used in the Gen 1's with exception of the HD that was exclusive( though not guaranteed ) to the dualies. 3.07 have a special case to offset the pinion due to the large pinion gear.

If you find a 32 spl Power Lok carrier, then you'll need the bolted hubs and axles to use it in your housing.
cheers,
Douglas

If the rear ends housing is larger due to the larger ring gear wouldnt I need to use that housing for the 3.07? I thought about finding a later 32 splined diff but then thought if the housing is larger due to the 3.07 then wouldnt the diff be bigger aswell? Man this is confusing. I called randys ring and pinion and they told me that its not available anymore. I want the 3.07 for a dd, but the limited-slip for the occasional winter snow. Thanks for the info douglas.

Hol' on a minute; ring gear is the same size. It is the pinion that is of different diameter...and for low( numeric)ones, it has to be big enough to require moving it away from the ring a bit.
cheers,
Douglas

Ok, so the housings (rear end itself) are all the same. And the diff's (carriers) are all the same. Why does some carriers say they will only fit a 4.10 ratio and up? What makes them different? Does anyone know why the 3.07 seemed to die off and was discontinued? Logic would say that some would want nice highway ratio. I know that with my 3.54 I run 70mph around 2000 rpms. With my old truck I had 4.10's, at 70 mph was around 2300 rpms. Anyone with 3.07's care to chime in with what I could expect at 70mph? Just in case people are wondering 70mph is the speed limit here in WV. Thanks, Robert

The Carrier for 3.07 gears is all by itself and a LS Unit from a 3.54 or 4.10 REar will not work due to the 3.07 Carrier being so unique.

In other words you can't take a LS Carrier from a 3.54 REar and bolt the 3.07 ring on....It won't go if i understand correctly. There has always been alot of Controversy over this

A Lock-Rite is what you need......Since it just goes in place of the stock spider gears. I know a guy that runs Lock-Rites in all his 3.07 Geared 1st gens and he loves them.

Since its going into a RC and I have a dually, I am not worried about towing. I want the ratio for fuel mileage. But my daily driver now is another 92 Ramcharger. It has a Dana 9.25 with a factory limited-slip in it. Last winter when we had all the snow I was in up to the bumper (RC is lifted) and this thing was awesome!! At one time it was 42" high! I drove all around like that. Since then I dont ever want to own a truck without Limited slip. Living up here I cannot imagine why people buy trucks with open rears in them. Especially after last winter. Thanks for all the info guys.

Brandon everything I am reading doesnt even talk about 3.07 ratio. I hope to find one before I rebuild this rear.
Here is a picture of the first snow before the second came a week later.

This is my dually in the back yard. Remember this was the first snow. About 28" in 16 hrs. Then 5 or 6 days later we got hit with another 14".
