Dana 70 to 80
I did some reading in the archives but did not gather all the information I was looking for.
I am considering upgrading to a disc brake D80. Has anyone done this succesfully. What else would need to be changed? Master cylinder? How about the ABS.
I do pull very heavy loads. I don't want to get in a debate about how much weight is to much for my truck but I am definately pushing the trucks limit.
Another consideration would be to upgrade to GM brakes. What is necessary for this conversion?
Thanks

There will be no ABS issue switching out the rears. They both use the same sensor in the differential housing. Everything should bolt right up. As far as brakes, you could upgrade to larger wheels cylinders, the GM ones, but if you have the opportunity, get a 2001.5 or 2002 Dana 80. This will give you rear disc. I did it on my 99, and am happy with it. You will need to put a new fitting on the brake line, but a double-flarring tool and a trip to the autoparts store will take care of that quickly.

Are you still using the disc / drum master cylinder?
Did you notice a sizeable difference in braking with the new or is that a stupid question
I guess what I'm asking is, if you are still running the original master, is it adequate to control disc/disc?
Thanks.

I have not changed my master cylinder. There is no difference. I researched this by comparing part numbers for the different models in the brake catalog before I swapped the rear. Same part number for 99 and 2002.

Hey Chris, how much difference was the axle widths on the 99 drum axles vs. the disc brake axle?? I've heard anywhere from an 1" to 2.5"
I'm doing this as soon as I find an axle,
Chris
