Cummins vs. Hummer ------Destruction

I was driving down my local highway the other day and saw a hummer stuck on the side of the road.

I live in the Outer Banks, NC. about 8 feet off the highway on either side is major water run-off from storms...and water is also there solely because we are a barrier island that's not very wide...when it really rains I'd say from street level it's about 2.5 feet deep in these 'channels' of muck.

So I pull over and the driver says he ran out of gas and lost everything...power steering, brakes, etc. He veers off the road and into this unsuspecting ditch at about 65mph...so he is DEEP in it.

I hook a tow rope (wish I had a shot of this) from his rear tow hook to my front tow hook. Start to pull him out but he's really stuck...so I could use some more juice.

This was the first time I put my truck in 4LO...holy power batman, it was amazing. He was coming out just fine then his hand shoots out the window, signaling me to stop...

the tire in front of his truck isn't a spare, it's his front right tire...snapped right off...silly old IFS...gotta love that solid front axle.

I felt bad...really nice guy, super cool family, just a day of bad luck.

Ironic much? I guess the old saying "Hummers are gas guzzlers" realy comes to life.

Atleast you stopped to give the guy a helping hand. How did he get out? A tow truck?

Ive been tellin people for years that the hummers are not the 4x4's people think they are. Especially the new ones. Overpriced piles of poo. Try an H3 based on the Colorado frame now that thing is junk. Cant go wrong with a jeep for a lot less and you could actually outfit it to be worth something or just buy a rubicon. I suppose then you would loose all that high class status though.

how did he get out...good question. A tow truck was coming to get him but it was coming from over 100 miles away...that's why he wanted my help.

I wish i could have waited around to see the carnage with the tow truck getting him out...but I figured after what happened I should probably just leave.

Shouldve gave him the # to the nearest dealership, his insurance company should total it out after they realize that the wheels just come off when you get unstuck

I've seen $2k Toyota beaters go places a Hummer couldln't even think about going. I'm convinced people with Hummers don't buy them for wheelin'.

I remember watchin' a show when the H1 first come out, they were givin' tours and showing ppl how well these stock animals drove in places they shouldnt. Well guess what the pilot truck was......yep a 500 dollar toyota with 22RE, 5 speed and 31" tires. When the Hummer got stuck the little toyota pulled them out....Funny as all heck.

Try linning that yota with several tons of armor and see how far it goes, lol.

Anyway, speaking of yota vs hummer my brother bought a new white Tacoma and I call it the Osama Tank if you ever see terrorist or gorilla fighters they always have a white Toyota Hilux with a machine gun in the back... Surprisingly mostly new trucks.

The H2 is based off the same GMT frame that the trailblazer uses...

Actually both of you guys are wrong. I used to work for HUMMER and yes they do use a lot of the same components as their GM brothers but the frames are not the same. Totally different. I am not trying to say the HUMMER's are better than anything else but they do some crazy stuff. Being in the military and driving them there, we put them thru some nasty rides. Also having gone thru the HUMMER training grounds in Indiana, they have over 20 miles of rivers, rocks, mud, you name it and we put them thru it. I agree, the H-3 is a turd but when I was working for Predator Motorsports in SoCal. we were doing the D-max conversions on the H-2 (and older H-1's) and now they are doing the 6L conversion on the H-3. Taking the 6L, tranny, t-case out of the H-2 and stuffing it in the H-3. Talked to the owner the other day and he said they SCREAM!! LOL!!

The bad things is that people buy them, install 22in or large wheels and do nothing else to beef up the suspension or steering or brakes and then wonder why things break. From the sounds of it, he went in pretty hard @ 65MPH and it could have happened to almost anything at that speed.

The HUMMER in that pic was clearly a street queen. Nothing like the H1's.

For me the bottom line is, if an H1 is good enough for the military, I wouldn't mind having one, but no H2's or H3's....
