i remember there was a cummins powered suburban in the top truck challenge a few years ago, sure was spiffy. let me see if i can find it.http://www.fourwheeler.com/2004toptr...c_competitors/ only pic so far its the one in the top left corner

The shop that did the work, Auto World of Montana, just finished doing a '95 Sub for a fellow in TX.. and are preparing to put a Cummins in a brand new (!!!) 06 Excursion.
Now *that* is loyalty to the brand.. the guy wants it so bad he'd take out a brand new PSD to make room!

Ken found the engine/transmission in Canada - it had less than 1k miles. This saved some money (I believe) since that meant engine, harness, tranny, clutch, etc. This is probably the *big* variable, since you can only deal with what you can find.
$7,500 for engine/trans (04.5 325/610 & NV5600 6-speed)
$5,000 for labor - BTW, the 12V was quoted lower here (less electroncs)
$2,500 for misc parts (4" banks exhaust, batteries, radiator, intercooler,
driveline shortening, A-pillar gauges (pyro, boost, FP), tach, console, clutch/brake setup, boots, 3" body lift, gap guards, etc).

On the mechanical stuff (Ken did), they had to modify the torsion bar brackets to adjust for the longer engine/transmission, to convert some of the IFS bolts to flush/countersunk ones for clearance, and to install a 3" body lift because the newer engine/transmission is deeper and wider than the 12V and they needed the room for clearance. They also had to get creative with their choice of radiator/intercooler, though it's still Dodge CTD. The also adjusted the driveline lengths to fit, and moved the ECM off the engine in order to use the ECM mount point for the motor mount (as it was, originally, I'm told).
The factory A/C is in and working, as is the cruise control, speedo, and Anti-lock brakes (all the electronics).
The prices for hardware and parts compared well with what I found elsewhere. They didn't appear to be trying to make a lot there.
I had them replace the windshield (serious cracks), carpet (they had it up anyway and my kids had spilt latex.. put in a rebuilt transfer case from a 1-ton 4x4, and again the prices were very good when I compared them. These items were above and beyond the $15k.
They farmed out the electronics, and I here think the learning curve cost them a bit. The fellow they partnered with spent a lot ($6k+) on the equipment to download/program the ECM (also did their GM and other cars that had been bothering them, so they're happy there). The Dodge dealer was no help, so in dealing with the electronics, that new gear saved the day - for example, they were able to reconfigure the ECM not to use the factory SKIM that came with. I suspect that now they could get it going, but at the time there was so little help (Dodge, etc) that the focus was to work around it.
They've got the electronics nailed now, and have since done another '95 Sub with the new engine.

Hmm I thought this year was the last year for the Excursion soooo---
I just bought a 05 Excursion with the intent of a Cummins conversion when warrenty runs out. The only thing that would keep me from doing it is if Dodge offered a Ram suv diesel by then.
I think it would be a great time (now that F**D turned tail and run cuz of envirmentalist pressure) for Dodge to put out a 'DIESEL' SUV to wup up on the Suburban.

I've always liked the look of the Ford since 99' and the 05' is pretty much the same.
Funny you mention the Yukon because the inlaws were here for new years in there new one. It was very nice also. But I wanted the vehicle that could best fit us eight , a snow dog (behind 3rd row) and still pull the skidoos. People say how big they are but it's barely longer than my 98' short bed and a foot shorter than the long bed (both quad cabs).
