Cummins running REALLY BAD!!!

Howdy all! Got a question. We got a truck in last night and its got some weird symptoms. Its a '02 3500 with about 25K on it. Here is the deal. Dude has air intake, 4" Exhaust-dual 3" out, an Edge Drag Comp Box with tapped wire and a full set of A-pillar gauges. Quote "I was driving down the road and upped to setting four and then there was no power at all and speed dropped. I had to limp it home. It would idle but sounded like it dropped a cyl or two." End Quote. We listened to it and its sounds bad at idle. Not hitting on all 6 and there is some white smoke. BUT when driven (with out the box plugged up) seems to run ok at higher RPM. Any thoughts?

Although my truck is stock your symptoms are identical when I lost my injector pump.

Re:Cummins running REALLY BAD!!!

As far as i can tell its normal at higher RPM. Great...that is no good new! SO if indeed it is the pump...how much of a job is it to remove? Never really went down that road. AND what upgrade pumps they offer for the VP?

Re:Cummins running REALLY BAD!!!

Did you check to see if any codes were set?
P0181 Fuel Injection Pump Failure
P0215 Fuel Injection Pump Control Circuit
P0216 Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure
P0251 Fuel Injection Pump Mechanical Failure Fuel Valve Feedback Circuit
P1688 Internal Fuel Injection Pump Controller Failure

This one could be brought on by a sensor going bad.
P0217 Decreased Engine Performance Due To Engine Overheating Condition
More information on codes at: http://www.troublecodes.net/chrysler/
Hope this helps

Re:Cummins running REALLY BAD!!!

There is a way to pull the codes on the digital speed-o. I don't know how but someone here will. I use the superchips programmer.

I got mine from West Texas Turbo Diesel http://www.westtexasturbodiesel.com/
He has good prices.

Re:Cummins running REALLY BAD!!!

put the key in the ignition and turn the ignition on and off (just turn to the "on" position, don't bump the starter!) two times and turn it on and leave it on on the third time. then watch the place where your odometer reading is usually shown. it will display any codes thrown.

Re:Cummins running REALLY BAD!!!

just a thought- it could be the wastegate.

As stated earlier I had the same symptoms and it was the VP-44 but I also had a bad diaphram on the wastegate.

Re:Cummins running REALLY BAD!!!

But as far as i know.....the wastegate would not cause it to miss or run VERY LOPEY at idle. COOL HINT on the Code thing! Love secoret codes! I work at a accessory shop, dont like the Supertuners for the Dodge. Its a hit or miss type deal on that one. Work on too many OBD-II trucks/cars and need to be able to read/reset codes on all. (Mechanic on the side!) Codes I got are as follows (AND NO i have not looked at the last post that was posted a few ago, but i will! haha):

1492 ; 1693 ; 0237 ; 1690 ; 0236 ; 1693

Thanks much!

Re:Cummins running REALLY BAD!!!

Since when are they concerned about the battery temp...and where the heck is the sensor?!?! Here is my guess at this...the map sensor codes are set due to the box. they could be ignored. The batt temp....well i don’t know about that one...but safe guess that is not causing my prob. DTC in PCM and ECM....well that is a generic code that probably pops with you get a code...again a guess. Fuel injection pump CKP Sensor Does Not Agree with ECM CKP Sensor is the one that worries me...but i did not get any pump failure codes...which is good I guess! Any thoughts would be appreciated as well are the current replies!
