cummins remanufactured motor blues......

last year my 06 truck dropped a valve with only 18k miles on the clock and dodge installed a "remanufactured " engine totally free of charge which runs fine and actually gave me better mileage than the original motor did. I have driven the truck about 4500 miles since and checked my oil the other day to find it almost 3 quarts low . I know it was full when the engine was installed and there are no leaks anywhere so I have to assume its going out the tail pipe. it doesnt smoke or anything and absolutely purrs but I didnt buy a new truck just to have to turn around and add 3 quarts of oil between oil changes like I did with my old 300,000 mile truck. my original motor would go 5k miles between oil changes and never used a drop of oil. it was always right on the full mark. any idea why this could be happening ? thanks

I've had motors use oil during the break period and then be ok after. Make sure you run the motor hard (pulling HEAVY for a long period) to seat the rings well. Don't change to synthetic oil until you've put at least 10k on the motor. I'm confident all will be well with your engine, just WORK IT HARD, they are built to be run!!!

the day I brought the truck home from the dealer with the new motor in it I installed a 2000 lb cab over camper and hooked up my 17,000lb trailer to it and it hasnt been disconnected since. thats all we use it for. its a work truck and is only pulling hard all the time. the original motor didnt use a drop of oil between changes , not even on the first oil change.

Get it back to the dealer ASAP and make sure that the oil consumption is noted and entered into the service history. Chances are that it may clear up with a few more miles, but if there is a problem you want to CYA.

Good luck with it.

It has been my experience that diesels don't even break in until 25K miles.
Give it a chance, of all of the complaints about the trucks, remember that 80% or better own these because of the cummin motor. Great power plant.

maybe burning some oil is not all that bad, since your first one didn't burn any, but didn't last either!!!!
i would take it back to the dealer who installed it, let them look it over to be safe, and just keep an eye on it for a couple more thousand miles. let the other guys said, some times take a bit for break in, and it sounds like your doing it right anyway.
Good luck

I'd say it's probably a combo of your engine still being broken in and the fact that you are running it hard. Mine has never used oil, but I didn't work it that hard right off the bat.

They can. I heard of it happening when people drive them like cars and don't put them under a load to break them in correctly.

Just my $0.02, but you could take a sample of your oil and send it to a place like Blackstone labs. The could tell you quite a bit about the engine from that. I had a piston rod bearing go on my truck at 12.8k miles. They replaced the engine also. After a year or so and 10k on the motor I sent a sample in and showed no problems. Then 6 months later and 24k on the motor I sent a sample in and they told me they were picking up traces of what could be antifreze . I started sending samples every time I get 4k on the oil. The strange part was the Potassium (possible antifreze) went back to normal at the end of last year with 29k on the motor. Now this spring, with 40k on the motor started sounding more like a diesel, the fuel mileage came up 1 mpg or better in the city and 2 mpg hwy now almost got 20 last week (I hand calculate mpg at every fillup since new). Sorry for the long post but the point is the engine may just need to break in, hopefully. But 3 quarts seems like a but much, get a sample and then take it in, trust but verify.

My truck is a Sunday truck and I never tow anything. The most load on it was a pallet of top soil. My truck lives an easy life and yes it is driven lke a Prius and never used an once of oil in its 17,500. I think there is something wrong with the engine during the remanufacturing. Just my $0.20
