Well, I stalled on the cummins crew swap. Can't find the time to get into the shop. When I do, I am stuck in a traffic jam. The frame is no longer on wheels. The ramcharger does not move. The new 4 door cab is on the floor with a cummins, auto, 205 package. There is other misc. carp that does not belong in a shop, like an old school, school desk. There is a dead tranny out of a 89 1/2 ton Dodge...whatever, too much stuff. So, the new plan is to do a quickie drop of the cummins auto package into the ramcharger and get it and engine out of the shop so I can move around. Then dive into the crewcab again. Before I can do the rc, I need to paint the crew frame and put the running gear under it so I can roll it outside. Anyway, check out the new blog. I've seen a few rc cummins swaps, but not too many with the removable top. [guitar] Should be fun.

Ha ha ha. Time, what's that. Work, kids on two different track teams with different meets and practice at different places. Graduate school work. Making fuel. Sleep. Yeah, time would be nice. Nice thing is, work stops on June 16 and doesn't start again til the end of Aug.

Lets see, in the past week I went in the shop a couple of times to grab my skimpy set of metric end wrenches so I could replace the alternator ($116 exchange:() in the 300d. Seems like I spend half my life doing stupid stuff like going back to napa to get the pulley shaft key out of the alternator core. [duhhh] I was smart enough to pull the pully, but too stupid to grab the key.

Lifted the body the rest of the way off yesterday. That was fun with the engine crane, by myself. I lifted the body, but the crane was in the way to roll the frame out and I could not back the crane far enough (poor planning). So I put a floor jack under the rear end and slid the frame out the side.
http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/pics/data/500/medium/DSC01824.JPG
The engine/tranny/t-case combo is pretty heavy (duh). The hoist did not want to roll. even when the engine was just two inches off the floor. The whole mess wanted to tip over when the engine got to swinging while I was moving it. So, I got the hoist in position with the weight as low as possible. Thien I raised it up and rolled the frame under it. It would have been easier to change the springs and axles without the power plant in place, but with the 5 inch lift and 35" tires, I would have had to lift the engine 6 or 7 inches higher. This was scary enough.
http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/pics/data/500/medium/DSC01830.JPG
Except for the squashed springs, the package looks like it was meant to be in there. The factory springs, no doubta little tired, are about an inch and a half from the bump stops. This is without the body and front-end.
For those of you who know what I am talking about and hav been wondering about the hole verses the slot for the motormount on the driver's side of the engine cross-member. I first eased the mount stud into the factory hole on the left, the lowered the rigt mount stud into the factory slot. It went in like butter. I thought I would need to slot the other hole, but, I did not.
The 1977 tranny cross-member looks to be about an inch too close to the front, and the mount holes are too narrow. I will swap it with the one from the 1992 donor w250, as both frames are 6 inches deek under the cab area.
http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/pics/data/500/medium/DSC01839.JPG
I included this pic to put the short wheelbase int perspective. Alwaysworking thinks I should just mount the rearend to the t-case [laugh]. I haven't measured it yet, but I think the rear driveline will be shorter than the front.

Worked on the rc some more today. A couple of days ago, I discovered that the tail housing was broken where it bolts to the Transfercase.
http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/pics/data/500/medium/DSC01841.JPG
http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/pics/data/500/medium/DSC01842.JPG
I took the tailhousing to alwaysworking. He will attempt to weld it up for me. He also has my Dana 60. He is welding on the new inner C in place of the one with the broken lower king pin.
Tiday, I killed my kdp. It was not out that much, but I was able to drive it in about an eight of an inch. Then I peened the case. Rhe most scary part was that te lower right (left when facing the front of the engine) case bolt was backing out. I could turn it with my fingers. I locktited and retorqued the case bolts. I was not able to get an timing case/crank seal (Memorial Day), I was not able to button it back up.
I worked on the power steering today as well. Since I am using the 1977 steering box and the ends are different than the 1992, I had to change some things. First, I used the 1977 low pressure line. This just hose clamped to the back of the pump. The problem lies with the high pressure line. After some study, it looks like I can cut back th steel part of the pump end of the 1993 hose, slip on the 1977 nut, and use a double flare tool to make a flare that will work with the old style pump and nut. Since I do not have a double flare tool, the completion of this part is on hold.
Also today, I removed the AC compressor and lines from the '92 ctd in the ramcharger and installed it on the '93 ctd that is still sitting in the donor frame but will go into the crewcab when the rc gets out of the shop.
Coming up, I will work on the fuel lines and patch a hole in the top of the tank where there used to be a vent. I plan to plumb the return into the fill tube vent.
Thats all for now, Eric

Had a little party in the shop yesterday. Alwaysworking and his dad brought me my new OD housing. Shortly after arriving, Confedpirate showed up in his new 1973 crewcab 4x4.
We put the overdrive back on and hung the transfercase. After moving the tranny crossmember back one holethen swapping the bracket end for end and monkeying around for a while, we finally pulled out the hot knife and slotted the holes in the crossmember in order to get things to mount up right.
I really appreciated the help and company. The np205 is a bear to wrangle yourself. Even when you have the body off.

what radiator are you going to use?
I have 1 radiator between the two projects. When I get to it, I will see if my 440 rad will work with the intercooler. Or I will use the one I have, and buy a new one for the crewcab.
Trooperthorn
06-03-2008, 11:13 PM
Last weekend I played roulette with the front axles from both of my projects and a donor vehic. The half-ton full time out of the rc is now supporting the dually parts frame. The Dana 60 out of the dually frame is now under my crewcab conversion frame. And, the 3/4 ton Dana 44 from the cc is now in the holding up the ramcharger with the cummins. The d44 had 4:10 ot 11 gears and warn hubs, but is only temporary. When Alwaysworking is done with my broken Dana 60 single wheel with 3:54 gears, it will go in. I mainly did the swap now to get the 5" superlift springs under the rc.
http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/pics/data/500/medium/IMG00023.jpg
Since installing this, I hooked up the power steering and drag link, installed the front drive line, hooked up the front brakes, swapped the fuel line from the right side to the left, and dropped the fuel tank.
To use the old style power steering lines that fit the old style steering box, I had to swap the fitting in the back of the ctd pump with one from a 70's vintage fitting. Once done, the old lines bolted right up.
The front drive line from the ctd donor fit the dana 44 with no modifications.
The brakes were the same story.
The fuel line moved over without incident. I still need to run a return line.
The fuel tank is pretty crudded up. The internals were rusty and there was about 4 gallons of nasty gas inside. Not sure where to go with it. I will see if I can find another guage sender and clean up the fill tube. Or, I may look for another, newer tank. I have an extra ctd sending unit, but I do not know if the guage sender would be compatible with the '77 guage in my dash. I suppose the sender is just a resister. Don't really know.
Thats the extent of the work for now.

Trooperthorn
06-07-2008, 02:10 AM
I did not get the axle in yet. Got invited to dinner. Will get it in tomorrow. Then I will work on the exhaust. After that, the body. Thinking about running the true 3" pipe off the turbo and past the t-case then split it into my two 2 1/2 from the almost new 440 pipes. Otherwise i do not have enough pipe to get it out from under the truck. What do you think? Will it soud right with the dual outlets behind the rear tires? The more I think about it the less I like it. Nevermind.
Alwaysworking
06-07-2008, 12:39 PM
you dont have to tail pipes that are 3inch off your donors?
if so then you just cut one to fit to the drivers side.
Trooperthorn
06-07-2008, 09:00 PM
I just ended the exhaust about a foot behind the case. That's all I'll do for now. If it is too loud, I will stick on one of my stock mufflers. May try to put on the body tomorrow, but I do not know how much time I will get after church and family stuff. I still need to fix up the delivery and return lines at the tank. I ran the hard lines from the engine back, though.

Been too busy installing a turned down elbow to post. Actually, I finished up the tank and fixed up the tranny harness. Then, I put the body back on. Then, for grins, we hooked-up the fuel solenoid and battery cables and torched it off. There was no fuel in the tank, and no radiator, and no intercooler, but we just ran the fuel out of the filter. It was cool. I have had this engine for over a year, even drove from Salem, Oregon to Reno and back in about 32 hours with just me and the dog to get the donor, but this was the first time I heard it run. Waiting for the video. Hint, Hint, poke, poke.

I thought about cutting it out big and overlapping it and spot-welding it in place, then goop the whole mess up with body pucky, but I thought this would be good general body patch practice. The fact that nobody will see it ia an added bonus.
thinking about it, you should have just put the whole firewall in out of the red cab in.
Its a toss-up. The red firewall was crumpled a bit on the pass. side. I would have had to flatten it. Then, when I was done, I would have to rely on my meager welding skills because it would have been structural rather than merely waterproof.
