Hey guys , I just pucked up a rust free 1990 suburban 2500 4x4 from California , I would like to repower the truck but say on a budget , I was thing 12 valve with a allison , I have a line on bus with a 542 allison , I know there limited to about 225 hp , I would figure my turbo 400 would be a better a choice .
Any one do any gm cummins conversion .

There's a shop in Austin,TX putting as 12V in a Suburban. They started with a 1993 D250.

That big Allison is going to turn the whole thing into a nightmare. Simplify matters and just use a Dodge trans.

1stgen545 was running a 545 in his truck for a while, but has since gone back to a 5 speed manual (I think). He would be a good person to get ahold of if you are considering that route, I do know that it is a very large trans and will probably require a body lift to fit it in your suburban. Keeping it simple is the best I agree ... The truck is going to be a project , I have a 97 dodge 12 valve I may retire the truck and pick up a Tacoma and use the 97 as the doner .
Its a 2wd so that trans is not going to work . I would love to do a manual but I don't have the best knee's and pushing in a clutch gets to be a pain in the butt .
With out a over drive this suburban won't be that great on the highway , so I may have to go with a manual .

Look for a 4x4 2nd gen tranny for your 97. I think the 1st gen sticky has a step-by-step on hooking up the lock-up. All the dodge autos after 91.5 have overdrive. You can keep it simple and still get what you want.

You could even swap out the output shaft and tail housing on your 97 auto.

Another option would be to find a rusted hulk doner 1st gen from 91.5-93 and swap the engine/trans/t-case as a unit. Nothing simpler than the old first gens.

Just got started on the sub a few months back ... its coming along , frame is all boxed and plated . Deaver front springs are in including the dana 60 . I am going to get some rear suspension and a 14 bolt under the truck .
Also going to clean and Por 15 the bottom of the body then I will drop in the drive line .

Just got the drivetrain in yesterday !
