Cummins owner inquiring about Jetta Diesel
I was looking to get an economical daily driver in addition to my truck. I was looking at the 2007 Jetta TDI with the 1.9 liter diesel. It gets 35MPG city/42MPG highway
Are they good diesel engines?

I've talked to 2 people that have owned them. They absolutely love them. They aren't finicky about the way there driven. They get better mileage than that too since they're more for mileage then power. If my wife would let go of the idea that she needs a monster suv with 3rd row seat we'd get one.

They dont make 2007 VW TDI's. I have an 06 jetta TDI and it absolutely is wonderfull. I average anywhere from 40-48 mpg (winter-summer, wife driving-myself driving). I have almost 33000 miles on it and laugh at fuel prices.

I have an '01 TDI Beetle that I love. I get anywhere from 47-51 on the hwy (70mph vs 55mph) and love the little car. Very dependable and pretty quick...you can also bomb the crap outta these things for some good power. You can't get an '07, you'll have to wait till 08.

He's right. They don't make an '07 TDI. We've also got an '06 and it's awesome. A couple of weeks ago we drove from Pocatello to Vegas on < 15 gallons.

We have an '06 TDI Jetta...Absolutely love it! Although the wife as not happy with me, as we had to sell the Dakota (4.7, auto, 3.92...loads o' fun!) since it was costing TOO much in fuel, payment, etc. We wound up saving ~$300 per month buying the Jetta NEW!
~38mpg commuting 1/2 traffic & 1/2 open freeway
~42mpg freeway, road trip.
What I've heard....VW will NOT be offering TDI's until '08. EPA crap!
BTW...great resource is http://forums.tdiclub.com/

You could also look at the Passat TDI. I have an '05 and love it. A 2.0 litre with 134 HP, a bit bigger and maybe better car. But a little lower mileage.

This is getting to be a common thread in this website.
I have an 03 Jetta that I love the mileage but hate the seat. Its just not comfortable for me. But I get 51-52MPG on a regular basis and commute 100 miles a day 5 days a week so its worth the discomfort.

I know what you mean. I commute 70 miles a day but last week went on a 700 mile trip (14 gallons) and my back is still killing me. Maybe next week I'll drive the CTD to work so my back can re-coperate.

They made a big batch of what is called "2006 Special diesel edition " TDI vehicles for sale in 2007
It was a cute way of not calling them a 2007 model year....
Yes, they are fantastic diesel engines, the 2004-200(7) year models have a slightly more powerful engine that uses unit injectors ("Pumpe Duse") but they do require a special VW spec engine lube oil for the Cam lobes and followers.
They are all timing belt engines with a mandatory belt replacement at <100Kmiles. (older models sooner)
Like others have said... TDICLUB.COM is your friend...
Lots of good info on there.
Read up on them, use the exact lube oil, and don't plan on WVO or less than perfect BIOdiesel in the PD engines.

Have a 03 5sp wagon, can't say enough good things about it, 75,000 miles, 0 problems, cruise @80, still get 40+. Chip it, you won't regret it. I add about 3 gallons of WVO to each tank, extends the range another 120+ per tank, adds a bit more lube to the IP.
