CTD intercooled??

CTD intercooled??
Are the Cummins intercooled? I haven't seen any threads regarding intercoolers for CTD's. If they don't come stock with an intercooler are there aftermarket plug and play units available?

Tom

Re:CTD intercooled??
89-91 model first gens were not intercooled. 91.5-93 model first gens WERE intercooled, they also started putting the cross flow style radiators on. So, from 91.5 to present, they have been intercooled.

Re:CTD intercooled??
Actually none of the Dodge/CTD's are "intercooled" but the model years listed above are "charge air cooled" there is a difference. Not much of a difference, but there is a difference. Sorry to sound like an attorney.
Maybe someone who knows a lot more than me can chime in with exactly what those subtle differences are. I remember reading a very detailed explanation at one time, but that brain cell has died.

Re:CTD intercooled??
What the heck is the difference between an "intercooler" and the current CTD "charge air cooler"? Inquiring minds want to know.

Re:CTD intercooled??
There isn't any difference between inter-cooled (cooling between turbo and manifold) and charge air cooled (cooling of the compressed charge of intake air). To be technically correct Cummins originally were after-cooled with a water box (anti freeze coolant cooled) which was mounted directly to the intake manifold with the turbo connector pipe bolted directly to it and one small hose clamped to the crossover at the turbo outlet. "Air to Air" coolers became popular in the 80's as higher power and emissions standards were raised, down side to "Air to Air" coolers is at -20 and below the intake air can be to cold for complete combustion. Intercooling is the european term for charge air coolers which gives an approximate 100F+ advantage over water boxes which will only supply air as cold as the coolant. PK

Re:CTD intercooled??
Intercooled came from turbo machinery like axial multistage compressors and also from large multi turbocharged diesels like those used on ships and for power generation. The term INTERcooled came from a cooler INbetween each turbo. First turbo (or axial compressor stage) took in fresh air, passed through a second turbocharger which then passed it into, you guessed it, AFTERCOOLER, and then finally to its point of delivery, either the engine manifold for a turbocharger application or the compressor reciever for an axial compressor. So for the record, in our trucks we actually have an aftercooler, although accepted slang calls it an intercooler.

At the power station where I work, we have a 2,500HP electric motor driven 4 stage axial air compressor. Four axial compressors with three intercoolers and one aftercooler. Pretty awesome machine actually.

Zino
Re:CTD intercooled??
For the sake of simplification you are all correct however Volvo, Mercedes Benz and several other european engine manufacturers have used this terminology for close to 40 years. Inter meaning between the Kompressor (german for turbo eg Mercedes Benz) and the recieving device the engine. Aftercooler to describe a cooling device after the compressing device vs non cooled air intake charges. These different cooling methods can be used behind or between blowers mechanically or exhaust driven and without will cause increased intake temperatures therefore increasing dreaded Exhaust Gas Temperatures. Inter coolers are also used in plants to reduce product line temperatures and cool water return sources. Every vehicle with a radiator by definition has an intercooler to maintain the coolant temperature at a prescribed optimum temperature. For the benefit of most here simplistic definitions and basic understanding of terms and function vs technical perfect correctness as per specific application reduces social friction and completes the needs of those who inquire through interest. The comment about the Detroit being the only true intercooled engine is also correct but for those new to diesel land 2 stroke Detroit diesels cannot run without the Roots blower (scavenging air engine). Detroit 2 stroke diesels with turbos also had other problems like blower over run hence a blower clutch designed to allow the turbo to push the blower faster and allow more air into the engine. Intercooler radiators were then installed to reduce intake temperatues and cylinder combustion temps. 900F EGT for a 2 stroke = 14-1500 EGT on a 4 stroke diesel and those are post turbo temps. All compressors generate heat, just grab the output line on a shop compressor after it has run for 10 minutes. Diesel engines are also compressors therefore again all are right by basic definition. PK
