Crewcab conversion ? Plus intro...

My name is Andrew in Tucson, AZ. Been lurking a while and finally got started on my project. I've got an 81 Crewcab that I'm putting a 90 non i/c cummins in. I ran into my first hurdle today putting it in. Hard to find any info on 2wd trucks, seems most are doing 4 wd's. Seems I'm about an inch off on my transmission mount. I'm using my original crossmember with the original mount off of the 81. I think redrilling the mount and moving might be my best option? Also, my donor just had a small section left of the core support so I have to use my original. As most of you probably know, the radiator mounts a little different. Is my best option to cut out what I have and weld it into my original core support? Thanks. I have to stay busy on this thing. I got rid of my 51 Plymouth today, so I need something fill the void!

Hey Welcome to the board!!

And another Cummins Crewcab that Thiss can add to his list.

I have a 2wd as well, but the people who did my conversion used a chunck of channel for my mount. But I have a factory 2wd unit on the way. But yes it does appear that I will need to move a little and then I'll have to drill a few more holes. But I think I might be able to use a couple of the orignal holes though.

Are you using a donor truck? If you are you will not need to do any mods using parts from donor. What trans are you using? A518 with donor support member will bolt right in and so will radiator and donor support unless you are using the 81 grill that may change things. Good Luck!!

I have some of the donor truck. The truck was hit in the front corners so the core support was cut just outside the radiator. Trans is a 727. The original mount and crossmember is different from mine on the 81. I think redrilling the holes on the actual transmission isolator bracket will move it back enough to bolt into my original transmission mount.

guess im turning this into a build thread. Today sliced and diced the 2 core support parts together. The 81 gasser radiater "ears" stuck out from the core support to much and faced the wrong way. I cut out the 90 "ears" and cut down the 81 and made them work. Also, welded in some all thread to mount the trans cooler and a/c condensor. Also had to clearance the lower core support mounts for the lower radiator hose and drain petcock. Another part that is easily over looked is the fact that you have to cut out the rectangles for the a/c and and transmission cooler lines. I plasma cut them out of the 81.

Looks like you have committed to using the '81 grille. That will be cool, most of us used the newer grille and just swapped the core support. I used a C&C machine and made a new trans mounting plate. I will add you to the list.

Figured it would be cheaper than trying to find a newer core support and grill. Plus gave me an excuse to do some cutting and welding..

Just as information you are going to need the steering centerlink from a 2WD DIESEL truck in order for your oil pan to clear. This center link has a double drop instead of the single drop used on the gasser trucks. This has been previously discussed in length on this forum.

Mine seems to work. My oilpan is not hitting it now.

Watch your front spring's it's going to drop pretty hard once you get it all in there . Gasser spring's are different .

Just a small update. Got the truck together and running and couldn't be happier. Still need to find 2 more hubcaps for the other side, but I'm on my way. Still some small items to iron out, but nothing to serious.
