Crankshaft position sensor and warranty claim

Check engine light came on and after a few restarts it cleared. Later in the week it returned and I noticed the tach dropped to 0 for about a second. I was fairly certain it was the Crankshaft sensor and after reading Cattle Haulers desciption even more certain. (great write-up) As I have about 85,000 on the truck I took it into the dealer. For 80.00 they diag'ed and said the sensor is going bad. It would be another 130.00 to replace it but they don't have it. Oh and it's not covered under warranty... Is this true?? How did it miss this. I though for sure it would be part of the 100,000 mile warranty. Dealer said nope nothing electrical on the engine is covered...mmmm.

My Mother-in-law just had her CPS replaced today at the dealer for $190. 100k warranty didn't cover hers either.

Re:Crankshaft position sensor and warranty claim

Very typical. Some dealers will cover stuff under warranty and another dealer just down the road will tell you it isn't covered. :'( :'( :'( Guess one should ask before letting the dealer work on it if they suspect a specific cause. Then get it in writing before the lay a hand on it.

BTW - Cummins can almost always beat DC on parts prices. I'm fortunate, where I live it is about a 45 minute drive to Cummins NW in Renton WA.

Jigdog. I couldn't remember the length. I knew it was 100k. Yep I have found the same thing. The dealers are different, It's amazing, you would think that one company but so many different rules at the dealers. No 2 alike. :

The dealers aren't different. You diag, find the cause (in this case the cps), the writer then takes the part number and runs it with your trucks vin and then gets the info from chrysler. If it's covered, they will tell us. If not they tell us that too. With the basic warranty it will be covered. Some service contracts cover the part too.

Re:Crankshaft position sensor and warranty claim

We just had a guy pull into the Muffler Shop and said his truck wouldnt go anymore (99 reg cab 5 speed)just back fired like an old 350 chevy with a bad cam,I told him that his lift pump was bad and he said theres no way it only has 46k miles on it so i called to verify it with Foresrt City Diesel and he said it was bad too,But anyway it was not only the lift pump but the injection pump was bad too they Warranteed everything but for some reason it cost him $79.00 of the $4200.00 job....
