crank sensor to tight?

Is it possible to get your crank sensor in too tight? I just replaced mine and heard alot of clicking from the crank case. Now the crank sensor is bad again. Someone had once told me not to tighten it to much or it would ruin it. My buddy had the sensor in before I got home so I don't know how tight it was put in. Any input would be great. Thanks BP

I believe your problem is the tone ring that the position sensor monitors. From what I understand this ring is bolted the crank and if it comes loose it will hit the position sensor. You need to drop the pan and either tighten or replace it.

Is the tone ring a fairly easy fix? Or should I just take it somewhere and have it done for me? All the input is a big help. Thanks alot.

If it's easy I would LOVE to see you do one. I've done two and they were both a major pain in the rear. One half comes off easy, but the other piece reminded me of those "chinese" puzzles where you had to have everything aligned just so (including the moon and stars) before it would somehow move into position.

sounds to me like I better just take it somewhere and have it done. I'm a backyard mechanic myself, can get most of the simple stuff done, but leave the major stuff to the pros.

Remove bearing cap between 5 and 6, remove # 6 rod and push to the head. Rotate crank until the small piece of the ring is at the lowest point remove the bolts. small ring comes out, rotate the large piece with the open end upward, Remove the ring.....

remove the sensor and see if the ring is hitting the sensor, Or with the sensor out check the ring, maybe you can tell if it is coming loose. Just a few checks

...well imagine doing that without removing the #6 rod. I'll keep that in mind if there is a "next time". It was funny though....both times I was able to manipulate the big piece out fairly easy....but found it a challenge to get the new one in. One I did the big section had come loose. The other was on a brand new long block that had a tooth broken off it. Engine ran like crap and I won't go into details how long it took to find that one!
