crank seal, is it just me?

OK back to my cover seal. the KDP is 'peened in' now. So i buy the mopar brand seal #5012290AA with the cute little installation sleeve. the sleeve doesn't HELP you install it. the way i see it it's just there to protect the new lip as you are installing this over the crank?
NOW, Is it just me or are there too many parts in that $31 seal kit?? I have one lip seal in my cover and i did not see anything that looks like the # 2 and #3 pieces in my pic . #2 is a flanged metal ring and #3 is an almost flat rubber seal with a thin metal stiffener backing piece made into it./

the instructions that came with it are possibly the worse i have ever seen!! they basically say "Install" , but really only show the main seal(#1) and nothing else.

1 is the crankshaft seal.
2 is the install/depth setting tool.
3 is the dust seal.

The crankshaft seal has a fragile Teflon layer and requires the plastic cone thing to insure the seal is not damaged when installing on the crankshaft.

When installed according to OEM instruction from both Dodge and Cummins, the seal is pressed into place after the cover is installed on the engine. Part no. 2 ensures the seal's installed to the correct depth.

The dust seal (no 3) goes on last with the big side up against the oil seal. Just push it on.

This may also prove useful . . . . https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=126282

Hope this helps.

Be really careful of the teflon seal, it is fragile.. make sure it doesnt bend or flex too much.

The seal guide is critical.

The directions also say to use locktite on the od of the seal.

It is really tricky to get that seal in.. I have done 2. the cover is also plastic, so dont beat on it too hard. take out the radiator when you do it too.

My 1993 dated Cummins B series service manual says the seal gets pressed in from the rear after inserting the depth setting tool is inserted and supported from the front. Same principal idea except you must remove the gear cover instead of just backing out the cover bolts. My Dodge service manual says it goes in from the front. So I guess it doesn't matter which direction it goes in as long as it goes squarely and facing the proper direction.

what a PITA getting that seal in. The install guide sticks out so far it hinders the install with any normal seal install tools. I used a Campbells chunky soup can. MMMMM good. a piece of 1/2 wood cut to fit inside the bottom lip of the can, for stiffness, and a large vice as a press. OH and most of all my third hand(Brandon).
I don't know if the aftermarket seals( + or - $10 depending where you buy) comes with this install sleeve, but i will be more than happy to mail it to someone for use. I know i won't be volunteering to use it anytime soon.

it took a while for my feeble brain to figure out that the Big end of the sleeve would pull through the new seal once installed.
the TST pics were a HUGE help. thanx , fellas.
ho ho ho,
crossy
