Cracking a piston or ring

Cracking a piston or ring
Wondering if anyone has had a problem with cracking your rings or pistons under high boost. I was talking with a good freind who drives truck for a living (Also a good diesel mechanic) We were talking about my truck since its down with a blown headgasket and going in for orings and head studs in the next week or two. I brought up I was planning on upgrading turbos and eventually doing twins. He mentioned that he would be worried about cracking a ring and or piston under the higher boost with my older 94 high milage engine (180k) I am going to go with the bd towing twins you think I will have anything to worry about or should I just go ahead and do a top end rebuild while the head is off??

I think that there may be a little more to this story, like not watching your egts or just being careless with your right foot. My 95 has 320000 on the ticker and I pull 12k 300 miles every weekend during the summer going to the race track. As long as you use common sense you shouldnt have a problem towing. Just my .02

I haven't seen or heard everything, but I have NOT heard of anyone cracking a piston since I've been on this site. I've heard of about 3 cracked rings since I've been here. I would say you will be just fine. There are plenty of folks towing heavy with big HP on here and they are doing just fine.

If the engine is in good condition, isn't burning oil or excessive blowby, there is no way I would invest the time and/or money in rebuilding it. Maintaining too high of egt is the only thing I can think of that could damage a ring or piston. Even new pistons and rings will be damaged from too high egt for too long.
