Cp3 Pump Leaking Again

Fellas,
Am I the only one with this pump issue. This is the 2'nd pump and it is starting to leak fuel now. I suspect my VA 3.1 is the root of the problem. The vendor says it cannot cause the leak, however they didn't leak until the box was installed and had been run for aprox. 15k miles. Any input????

Nope you are not the only one with this problem. I had one replaced at eleven months and it now leaks also. The problem is that it doesn't leak constantly. It seems to be something cold weather related. Mine leaked a few times last winter and then the leak disappeared only to rear it's ugly head again once the cold weather returned. It is now leaking more frequently but from previous experience the dealer will not replace it unless the leak can be duplicated. You can see the fuel dripping down the wiring harness under the pump on to the tie rod and differential and then on my new concrete driveway. This looks great. It's a real pain in the rear to slide a drain pan under the truck every time I park on the driveway.

Maybe DC will do something after a few of our trucks burn up.

I did start a new topic on the leaking pump because I saw a post over on TDR about a possible recall that you have to be a member to view. I am not a member. Possibly someone who is can enlighten us. This issue, persistent leaking cab marker lights and a water leak in the cab (not related to the cab marker lights) that the dealer won't fix because leak can't be duplicated has me very seriously considering unloading this leaker this weekend.

I really like the truck and bought it thinking I could keep it for many years and miles. It now does not appear that I can afford to. With the water leak the passenger floor will rust out in no time. Even if we can get the pumps replaced with the 7/100K Cummins warranty what are you going to do after it expires? I for one can't see paying the $2500.00 that these pumps are rumored to cost every year or two. My truck has been in the shop way too much and I am just plain sick and tired of it. These commonly referred to little things sure add up.

I just had the same issue with mine and the dealer installed a new one under the 100,000 mile warranty. Mine has 37,000 miles on it. It seems to have a lot more power now and the idle isn't jumping around. But time will tell. Its hard to believe those pumps are so costly from the looks of them. My 2002 Ram started falling apart at 40,000 including the VP44 so I traded it on this one. In the last 2000 miles I have had the steering gear box replaced and all 4 ball joints. I like the truck but if it keeps up I may have to return to Ford...

Idle jumping around.....the electronic fuel control actuator (black solenoid on the back of the CP3) was going bad causing that.

I replaced a few of them back in 03, but haven't seen any issues with them in quite awile.

Ball joints.....most likely mis diagnosed.

Steering box.....still running stock tires and wheels?

Did you have to pay a deductible?

Yeah I got stuck with the 100 deductible and the dealer was quick to point out that the bumper to bumper was over. I also heard that the factory rep was there looking at the truck to see if it was modified or abused.. As far as the ball joints go, well they replaced them and didn't do an alignment. Dodge won't inlcude a front end alignment with a ball joint replacement. So I got stuck paying them to realign the front end and its still not right but meets spec according to the dealer. The steering box started leaking and got worse so I got that in before the 36000 miles and had them do the TSB (which I had to provide copies) for the door seals. Tires are stock. I really don't plan to modify the truck at this point. Big tires look good but they don't work good in snow. I just hope this truck will last.

Go back to your crooked dealer and get your 100.00 back. The pump is part of the 7/100k mile warranty on the engine.

Maybe but once you've gone past the original 3/36 you have to pay the deductible.

News to me...the '99 had 2 LP's replaced. The second one was in October of '03 with 68k on the clock. Not one red cent left my pocket.

Not when it comes to the drive train which is 7/100. i6DZUL is correct.

Just a thought on your power steering pump.Myn pump started leaking the first day i bought it.Had it towed to Dodge thinking it was a tranny leak.It was the power steering pump reservoir cap.The cap has vent holes in it to bleed off any pressure mine was not venting found that out when we tried to unscrew the cap it shot up in the air like a champagne bottle .Changed the cap and haven't had a leak since.

After reading i6DZUL's post I checked my warranty and the injection pump is mentioned in both the power train and cummins warranty. But, the cummins warranty does not require the 100 deductible until the vehicle is 5 years old. So I called the dealer who told me the book wasn't right and the 100.00 applied. Then called Dodge who said 100 doesn't apply for my truck and the book is correct..I'm sure after this is over I will be looking for another dealer to do any repairs on my truck. And the power steering was the gear box not the pump but good observation. Thanks i6DZUL, I have my fingers crossed that I'll see that 100 bucks back.

Did you run it on level 1 or 2?
