Could AFE = increased EGT's??

Heard this from an AFE dealer today...

A guy reported back to him that after installing his new AFE intake on an otherwise completely stock '03 H.O., his EGT's went up about 50* across the board. The dealer's only explanation was that now the motor was getting so much "extra" air, the stock exhaust could not expell it quickly enough.

Is this a valid argument, or is this poor guy just having a bad installation issue? Is an AFE (or other intake system) a good stand-alone upgrade, or is an exhaust system "required" to make any difference? I certainly don't want to be increasing my EGT's... [undecided]

Are you talking about a stock replacement filter or the complete intake system? I really don't have any info pertinent to your question, just curious what my next bomb will be. ;D ;D

Ed

Re:Could AFE = increased EGT's??

nonsense.

But think about it: the stock system draws (a small maximum amount of) cool air from the outside. the AFE draws (a high maximum, amount of) hot air from the engine compartment. Under light loads the engine uses (about) the same amount of air from the AFE as its would from the stock air box. only in the case of the AFE, all the air is now coming from under the hood (meaning warm air). So it makes perfect sense that the AFE or any other simliar under-hood system would result in higher EGTs under these conditions.

However, the benefit of such high flow air systems is that under very heavy loads and modified fueling, the extra air volume itself will reduce EGTs even though it is all coming from under the hood. I suspect that the "50 degree" increase in EGTs is inconsequential, occuring well below critical maximums. Load 'er up with a heavy, long tow and then make the comparison. The AFE will surely outperfom the stock air box. But then, I would expect the Scotty Air II to outperform the AFE.

I don't know the setup on the AFE.
If the stock filter is replaced by a "complete system" ie box and filter, then it should be drawing air from outside. I agree if the box is deleted and you suck air in from the engine compartment, then you get nothing but hot air.

Kinda makes you think either do it all or don't do anything, especially for those of us who don't pull heavy loads on a daily basis. That is if the new system uses fresh air!!!!!!

just my demented thoughts for the day..........
G

Many of the air systems are a box like enclosure that does not ensure that you are getting outside air all the time.

We took that into consideration when I designed the Scotty II for the 2nd gen trucks and again when we finished the Scotty Air III for the third gens. Drawing hot air at idle is a definate deterrent, rolling down the highway is not as detrimental as the air is moving too fast to get heated as much.

Scotty,
On the second-gen system, a hole is cut into the firewall to get air from the cowl area, right? I have only seen a few pictures of the Scotty III; how does it suck more cool air than the stock airbox? Is there a hole cut somewhere that I have not seen? I am extremely interested in this setup, and want to get info straight from the source! Thanks, and keep up the good work!
