Cooling System Problems
On my new to me 04.5 my waterpump went out np fixed it took it for a spin and still getting to hot ( ordered thermostat from Genos but it didnt get here as fast as my waterpump from Napa). Anyways my temperatue is acting weird it will stay normal for about 15 mins then after I get on it a couple times it shoots staight up to arounnd 220 or so. I am wondering what besides t stat causes overheating. Also just figured out my heater isnt heating could it be the heater core is gone and it is causing these problems or heater core blocked? THANKS

When I did my water pump I had a similar problem I removed the heater line from the top on the exhaust side and ran the truck until water came out, than topped of the radiator and tank.
Air will get trapped in the engine causing the engine to overheat.

There should be a hex head plug on top of the head toward the front. You should unscrew this and then fill it with fluid. This will also help with burping the engine.
As soon as you see fluid coming stop pouring and reinstall the plug.

Did you use the correct HOAT coolant in order to top it off ? You can get the pink colored Mopar coolant from a Dodge dealer or NAPA carries Zerex G0-5 HOAT coolant in the gold bottle.

REFILLING COOLING SYSTEM - 5.9L DIESEL ENGINE
Clean cooling system prior to refilling
1. Close radiator drain plug.
CAUTION: Due to the use of the one-way check valve, the engine must not be operating when refilling the
cooling system.
NOTE: The diesel engine is equipped with two one-way check valves (jiggle pins). The check valves are
used as a servicing feature and will vent air when the system is being filled. Water pressure (or flow) will
hold the valves closed.
2. Fill the cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of distilled water and antifreeze.
3. Fill coolant reserve/overflow tank to the FULL mark.
4. Start and operate engine until thermostat opens. Upper radiator hose should be warm to touch.
5. If necessary, add 50/50 water and antifreeze mixture to the coolant reserve/overflow tank to maintain coolant
level. This level should be between the ADD and FULL marks. The level in the reserve/overflow tank may drop
below the ADD mark after three or four warm-up and cool-down cycles.

When I changed the coolant out in my truck this summer, I disconnected the heater core hose that goes from the head to the heater core. I have a shutoff valve in that line to help the A/C work better, so I just disconnected it there. While filling the rad with that line disconnected when the system was full some coolant comes out of the hose. Button it up and fill the overflow bottle and you have most of the air out of the system. A day or two of normal driving and I topped off the overflow again and she has been holding that level ever since.

Yeap, you have air in the system. Fill the radiator full, leave the radiator cap off, run it until the top radiator hose gets hot. It will take a while to burp the system this way. You can use any of the shortcuts mentioned above. I see the book says you don't have to do this. I say bull!!!!!

Also when I pulled the stat there was no fluid in the hose above or the block below the stat, should I add fluid in either of these place to help?? Thanks

Is the Hex head toward the front on the passenger side above the manifold? Look small for me to pour fluis in but I will try.
