coolant additives

Just curious, anyone have any input on coolant additives??
We started using them on our trucks etc. All I have seen are a dark purple in color and are supposed to put the PH back or maintain it between servicing, they are different than the "water wetter" products. The usual dose is 8oz for up to a 10 gal system. In my lab I was somewhat shocked to see the PH of straigth coolant to be at the top end of caustic, 13+PH that is, Which makes sense being combustion acids etc will spoil this PH and the acids will eat the rad and block up. They claim using these will eliminate flushing. But they dont mention the silica gelling in the coolant and plugging off passages? ???

Re:coolant additives

not sure what addative ur talking about but i have used water weter with good result not sure if it balances the PH. east wood sells a product they say will balance the PH but never used it. Not only will coolant become it will actually develope a electrical charge. this is the cause of alot of head gasket failures because the gasket act like an anode and gets eaten away.
I like to change my antifreeze regularly to avid this problem...

Re:coolant additives

as far as the acid level (ph) in your coolant, baking soda is a great antacid or ph balancer & as for electrolicis ( yea I can spell ) a zinc tab should handle that & avaliable at your local boating store

How much baking soda in the radiator, and will it and the zink tab totally dissolve in the coolant?

If one would flush the cooling system and add the correct amount of coolant, would he add baking soda and a zink tab at that time? How long is this treatment good for?

I may know how to spell, but I am sure ignorant about chemistry ;D

Breakseverything - just jerking your chain on the spelling. Hope you're not touchy.

Without a doubt there is no substitute for a fresh service in the cooling system, but between services this might be ok. I ran out to the shop to see what we use its Pentacool additive.I think pretty much everybody has their own name be it from Napa or the local truck shop.

I know I can't spell the $50 words that why I said spell check but anywho no biggie jerk away
ok as for how much baking soda get a PH test kit at your local pool supply & as for the zinc tabs yes in time they will get eatin away totaly since electrolysis goes after the softest metal first & then to the next thing available

as someone allready said this is not a replacement for regular service just an prevention aid

Re:coolant additives

Its been my impression that the ph is more importatant on a wet sleave (?) motor. I recently had to tear down my Oliver tractor because of poor maint.. The o-rings were completly eaten away by electrolysis, allowing antifreeze into the oil. Motor only had a couple of hundred hours since teardown on it (none of these by me zept for the last 2).

Had never thought of the head gasket being eaten up with arcing due to electrolysis, but can see it happening. I'm going to check the ph level in the truck just for fun (tractor again also). Oh , and yes, I add 1 can of conditioner in the spring and in the fall to tractor.
