Cool down timer input..........
Cool down timer input..........
Afternoon Gentleman,
I think I have seen one "cool down timer" for 1st Gens. I know there must be more out there and I know that this group will know which ones are the best.
Let it fly guys and maybe somehow, some way that baby might end up in my stocking for Christmas.
Happy holidays to you all!!
David

the only one I know of is this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Diese...=p4506.c0.m245
I've read from a couple guys on here that it's a good timer, but I have no experience with it personally. I was looking to buy one but it's winter here now so it's kind of pointless. Things cool off quick when you're sucking in -15C air.
Not even sure I can post it here but here it is. If it's not allowed someone delete it.

I've used auto starts with good success. Push of a button and it fires off in the cold, they can be set to auto start based on coolant temp. Push the button before shutdown and they will run for the allotted time as a cooldown feature, etc.
As we know, our trucks fuel supply is controlled with a 12v solenoid.
With that, one simply has to connect a time or EGT based controller to feed 12v to the solenoid during the cool-down period.
- The problem I have found with that is our trucks PCM grounds the 12v line feeding the solenoid some seconds after switching the ignition off. With that, the cool-down timer's function is negated.
I had to install a simple diode (a one-way check valve for DC current) in the factory harness as it approaches the fuel solenoid. That way, with shutting down the ignition, the PCM can do what it wants without interfering with the 12v feed from the cool-down timer.
Hope this helps.

I picked one up from ebay for 10 bucks...
Ad said 'Lost instructions and never installed" - I figured it can't be too difficult to install.
Pulled it apart and found batt and gnd leads easily. The one to keep the truck running comes off the relay - that's easy....
Took a while to figure out the emergency brake lead - just ground it and you don't need to apply the e-brake.
Prob 2 1/2 hrs tinkering and pulling the steering wheel covers to get to the wiring harness. Traced the battery and run leads, tapped into them. Connected ground and the e-brake lead to cab ground.....
Love being able to set the timer, turn off the key, lock the truck and know it will stop on it's own...
Plus you don't have to sit and wait for the egt's to come down !!

- The engine is shut down with a user adjustable EGT set-point (mines at 350*F).
- If the EGTs haven't cooled to your set-point after 5 minutes run-time, it'll shut it down anyway.
- If a thief tries to take your mess, the engine is shut down with touching the brake pedal.
It serves me well.
